A 21-year-old student, Harriet Trewhitt, underwent a remarkable experience during her cancer treatment journey, where she had a tattoo from her arm put onto her tongue. Trewhitt, from Northallerton in North Yorkshire, England, had half of her tongue removed as part of a skin graft following a diagnosis of tongue cancer earlier this year. Sharing her story, Trewhitt described the moment she first saw her arm tattoo inside her mouth as “unbelievable.”

Trewhitt initially noticed a painful ulcer inside her mouth in December 2024 but didn’t think much of it. However, after consultations with doctors, she was sent for a biopsy which revealed squamous cell carcinoma, a type of tongue cancer. This led her to undergo a grueling six-hour operation where her tongue was reconstructed using skin and blood vessels from her left arm, a procedure she found surprising and fascinating.

The young student, who is also an acting student and support worker, explained that the tattoo on her tongue was originally a semicolon, a symbol representing resilience for those battling depression. Trewhitt’s tattoo had a deep personal meaning to her, symbolizing the decision to continue life despite struggles with severe depression and anxiety from a young age.
After the skin graft operation, Trewhitt’s arm tattoo found its new place on the right side of her tongue, prompting her to share that the story of her tattoo transfer now serves as a “good dating anecdote.” Despite the initial challenges in recovery and speech therapy sessions, Trewhitt remains positive and resilient as she prepares for her master’s degree in 2026.
During her recovery journey, Trewhitt underwent proton beam therapy at The Christie Hospital in Manchester, U.K., following her all-clear from cancer earlier this year. Proton therapy is a targeted radiation treatment method that minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissues. Trewhitt expressed her appreciation for the support she has received throughout her healing process and highlighted the importance of staying positive amid challenges.
Reflecting on her recovery, Trewhitt acknowledged the emotional and physical hurdles she faced post-operation, including the need for additional surgery due to complications with blood vessels. Despite the setbacks, she remains determined to overcome each obstacle and embrace the unique journey her cancer treatment has taken her on, including the unexpected placement of her cherished tattoo onto her tongue.
Trewhitt’s story serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing her resilience and strength in the face of adversity. Her positive outlook and determination to thrive post-treatment highlight the importance of finding silver linings in challenging situations. As she continues her recovery and pursues her academic aspirations, Trewhitt’s journey is a reminder of the power of courage and perseverance in the face of life’s uncertainties.
