A bride’s wedding night turned tragic when she fell from a hotel window and sustained severe injuries, altering her life forever. The incident took place at the Deebert House Hotel in Kilmallock, Ireland. The bride, Jackie Sexton (formerly Tyrrell), and her husband, Christopher Sexton, had returned to the hotel after their wedding reception in the early hours of the morning on February 29, 2020. Jackie recalled that she had consumed a significant amount of alcohol that day and last remembered sitting on the windowsill with her feet up on a table while smoking a cigarette before blacking out. She woke up in Limerick University Hospital the following day, only to learn from Christopher that she had fallen 25 feet from the second-story window, resulting in fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, and multiple other injuries.

Jackie’s senior counsel, Barney Quirke, detailed the events of that night at the High Court in Ireland. He mentioned that when Christopher returned to the hotel room after being in the bathroom, he discovered that Jackie was missing. The window was open, and he heard sounds of distress coming from the courtyard below, which was wet and snow-covered at the time. Due to the restricted access to the area, it took some time to reach Jackie, who had suffered significant injuries as a result of the fall.
As a result of the incident and the extensive injuries sustained by Jackie, her wedding weekend was marred by devastation. She recounted how the fall had a profound impact on her life, forcing her to give up activities she enjoyed, such as walking, swimming, and her work in hospitality and medical device production due to persistent back and leg pain. The physical and emotional toll of the accident led to a challenging recovery journey that involved surgery, wearing a surgical collar and braces, using a wheelchair and crutches, and undergoing rigorous physiotherapy.
Jackie subsequently lodged a personal injury case against the Deebert House Hotel, alleging negligence and breach of duty in failing to ensure her safety in their premises. The case was settled on December 5, with the bride reaching an agreement with the hotel. The hotel refuted the claims made by Jackie, asserting that they had installed window restrictors in compliance with building standards in 2014. Despite the denial of liability by the hotel, the settlement was reached to address the devastating impact on Jackie’s life following the incident.
The legal proceedings revealed the heartbreaking aftermath of the fall, highlighting the challenges Jackie faced in her recovery and everyday life. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures in public spaces, especially in hospitality settings where guests should feel secure and protected. The bride’s ordeal sheds light on the long-lasting consequences of a single moment of negligence, urging businesses to prioritize the well-being and security of their patrons to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The outcome of the case underscores the significance of accountability and duty of care in ensuring the safety of individuals in all establishments.
