Molly, a loggerhead sea turtle native to the waters around the Florida Keys, has been welcomed back to Higgs Beach after undergoing a life-saving surgery earlier in the year. Estimated to be between 25 to 30 years old, Molly was discovered entangled in commercial fishing lines attached to a crab trap by a charter fisherman in August.
Unfortunately, the fishing lines were not the only issue for Molly; she also had a massive 10-pound tumour growing from the left side of her neck, causing her immense pain and discomfort.
The Turtle Hospital, situated in the Florida Keys, played a vital role in Molly’s road to recovery. The dedicated facility focuses on rehabilitating injured sea turtles and releasing them back into their natural habitat. Upon Molly’s arrival, it was evident that the tumour had left her severely anemic, putting her life in jeopardy.

With the expertise of Dr. Terry Norton, Molly underwent a complex three-hour surgery on August 12 to remove the tumour and initiate her journey towards healing. This procedure marked a significant milestone as it was reported to be the largest tumour successfully removed from a sea turtle by The Turtle Hospital.
Following the successful operation, Molly’s focus shifted to regaining strength through a wholesome diet consisting of mackerel, squid, and lobster in preparation for a second surgery. Over a month later, on September 24, she underwent another surgery to remove smaller tumours, ultimately paving the way for her complete recovery.
After two months of careful monitoring and care at The Turtle Hospital, Molly was finally deemed ready to return to the ocean. On the morning of November 25, surrounded by hundreds of well-wishers at Higgs Beach, Molly was released back into the open waters. To enable ongoing tracking and research, she was equipped with a satellite-tracking device attached to her shell, allowing experts and the public to follow her progress for up to two years.
As of December 2, Molly was observed heading north along the Gulf coast of Florida, showcasing her resilience and determination to thrive in her natural environment. The remarkable turnout for her release serves as a beacon of hope for the conservation of sea turtles and the preservation of our oceans, as highlighted by Bette Zirkelbach, manager of The Turtle Hospital.
Molly’s journey from entanglement and illness to recovery and release is not only a testament to the dedicated efforts of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centres but also a reminder of the importance of marine conservation and protection. The inspiring story of Molly’s resilience and the community’s support underscores the significance of collective action in safeguarding our precious marine ecosystems for future generations to cherish.
By sharing Molly’s triumphant return to the sea, we are reminded of the critical role each individual plays in preserving our oceans and the diverse species that inhabit them. Let Molly’s journey symbolise a call to action in advocating for marine conservation and fostering a harmonious coexistence with our marine life companions.
