In a tragic discovery that took over three years to solve, authorities in southwest Utah have finally been able to identify the remains found at the base of a cliff as Jamie Leek, a missing man. The mystery began on Aug. 20, 2022, when the “very decomposed” remains were initially discovered, revealing that the victim had died from blunt force trauma consistent with a fall. Efforts to uncover the man’s identity had been ongoing since then, until a breakthrough was made earlier this year.

Authorities were first alerted to the grim discovery at 1400 Red Ledge Road in Washington City, Utah. The victim, a man between the ages of 25 and 35, was found with no identification on his person, further complicating the investigation. Despite the lack of immediate identification, investigators from Othram, a company specializing in forensic genealogy, were able to assist in piecing together crucial information to crack the case.
At the time of his demise, the man was clothed in large pants, a hoodie featuring the logo “PPG Pittsburgh Paints,” and athletic shoes. Lieutenant Kory Klotz of the Washington City Police Department described the state of the remains as mainly bones with some remnants of clothing, indicating that the individual had been deceased for a considerable period. While the exact circumstances leading to the fall remained unclear, authorities ruled out any suspicion of foul play in the incident.
Following the initial forensic examination, the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed that the man had succumbed to injuries from a fall. However, the challenge of identifying the victim persisted until advancements in DNA testing provided a breakthrough earlier this year. Through funding secured for advanced DNA analysis, Othram Laboratory was able to establish a familial connection in Blair, Wisconsin, leading to the identification of the deceased as Jamie Leek, born on June 15, 1973.
According to information gathered, Leek departed Wisconsin in 2017 with intentions of relocating to Las Vegas. His family had last heard from him between 2021 and 2022, and his sudden disappearance had left them with unanswered questions for years. Detective Thomas Lloyd, who tirelessly pursued the missing person’s case, was ultimately able to provide closure to Leek’s family by solving the mystery of his whereabouts.
Lieutenant Klotz acknowledged the emotional significance of bringing closure to the victim’s loved ones, stating, “At least now there’s some closure for them… They know where Jamie is, and he’s in a better place now.” Despite the identification of Jamie Leek, the Washington City Police Department has not yet provided additional comments on the case.
As this tragic chapter comes to a close with the identification of the missing man, it serves as a reminder of the dedication and perseverance shown by law enforcement in resolving such cases. The successful outcome underscores the importance of continued advancements in forensic technology and collaborative efforts in bringing closure to families impacted by similar tragedies. may this development offer some solace to those affected by this heartbreaking loss.
