Popstar Katy Perry has been granted $1.8 million in damages due to lost rental income in an enduring dispute regarding a Montecito mansion, as ruled by the court.

Perry and her former partner, Orlando Bloom, purchased the lavish $15 million property in Montecito, California, back in 2020 from the previous owner, Carl Westcott. Almost immediately after the sale, Westcott attempted to annul the deal, claiming he was mentally incapacitated. This move kickstarted a legal battle that has spanned several years.
The court determined that Perry, who had initially sought $5 million for lost rental income and property repairs, should receive $1.8 million in damages. The legal wrangle ensued after Westcott tried to retract the property sale and took legal action against Perry’s business manager, Bernie Gudvi. However, the court found no substantial evidence to support Westcott’s claims of incapacity and deemed him coherent and rational.
In addition to the lost rental income, Perry requested reimbursement of $1,343,401.95 for necessary repairs, as per court documents obtained by PEOPLE. Ultimately, Judge Joseph Lipner of the Superior Court of the State of California ruled in favour of Perry, awarding her a total of $1,842,142.84. This includes compensation for the delayed closing period, subtracting the retained capital and Westcott’s lost interest.
Gudvi was directed to subtract the $1.8 million from the remaining $6 million owed to Westcott from the property sale. A hearing has been scheduled for Gudvi to contest the judgment on December 30. Perry and Bloom invested in the Montecito estate to create a family home for themselves and their 5-year-old daughter, Daisy Dove.
The expansive property boasts eight bedrooms, eleven bathrooms, a three-bedroom guesthouse with ocean views, an infinity pool, jacuzzi, and outdoor fireplace. While it remains unclear whether the couple has moved into the estate since gaining access in May 2024, their intention was to rent out the property starting from February.
Perry, currently occupied with her Lifetimes Tour, is gearing up for a performance at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai on November 26. The mansion’s monetary saga comes as a backdrop to the popstar’s professional engagements.
The legal victory for Perry sheds light on the complexities surrounding high-value property transactions and the persistence required to navigate convoluted legal battles. Individuals and celebrities alike often find themselves embroiled in disputes that test the boundaries of property ownership and contractual agreements.
As Perry’s battle for justice continues, her resilience in standing up for her rights serves as a testament to the challenges faced by prominent figures in securing their assets and investments. The resolution of this case underscores the importance of legal due diligence and perseverance in safeguarding one’s financial interests.
In the realm of celebrity real estate, the saga surrounding Katy Perry’s Montecito mansion sets a precedent for how legal disputes can unfold even after a property sale has been finalised. It serves as a cautionary tale for both buyers and sellers to be vigilant and proactive in protecting their rights and interests in high-value real estate transactions.
To conclude, Katy Perry’s multi-million-dollar legal victory highlights the intricate nature of property disputes and the arduous journey to secure financial compensation in the face of contractual quandaries. Her determination to seek justice underscores the significance of legal recourse in upholding property rights and navigating complex legal battles in the high-stakes arena of real estate transactions.
