Man Dresses as His Dead Mother in “Mrs. Doubtfire-”Style Scheme to Collect $60,000 Pension, 3 Years After Her Death

An Italian man has recently made headlines for his elaborate scheme involving impersonation and fraud. The 56-year-old man, whose identity remains undisclosed, went to great lengths to deceive authorities by dressing up as his deceased mother in a bid to continue collecting her pension even though she had passed away in 2022. The man mimicked his late mother, Graziella Dall’Oglio, who was 85 years old at the time of her death, by donning a blouse, skirt, lipstick, and a short brown wig, reminiscent of a scene from the movie ‘Mrs. Doubtfire.’

According to reports from the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the man managed to dupe officials for three years following his mother’s demise. He failed to report her death and continued to claim a substantial sum of €53,000 (equivalent to $60,000) in survivor’s pension benefits, as well as income from the family’s property assets and land holdings. The man, described as a former nurse who is currently unemployed, sustained this charade until a fateful visit to renew his late mother’s identity card unveiled his intricate disguise.

On November 16, a clerk at a registry office in Borgo Virgilio, located east of Milan, grew suspicious of the man’s appearance during the ID renewal process. The clerk noticed discrepancies in the man’s attire, including a faux neck hairpiece, heavy makeup, and visible beard holes beneath the greasepaint. This prompted the clerk to alert Borgo Virgilio Mayor Francesco Aporti and local authorities, leading to a subsequent investigation. Mayor Aporti recounted the incident, stating, “She looked very much like the woman in the photo on the ID. But there was something that didn’t convince the employee, like the hair on her neck, the heavy makeup, and it looked like beard holes were protruding from the greasepaint.”

Subsequent analysis of video surveillance footage corroborated suspicions, as it revealed the man arriving in a vehicle, despite his mother not possessing a driver’s license. Confronted by the mayor and police officers at the registry office, the man eventually confessed to his deceptive act and acknowledged that the late Graziella was indeed his mother. Following his admission, authorities accompanied the man to his mother’s residence, where a shocking discovery awaited them. Inside the home, they found the mummified remains of Graziella, prompting speculation about the circumstances of her death.

Mayor Aporti expressed that while Graziella may have died naturally, further examinations, including an autopsy, would shed light on the exact cause of her passing. Despite the financial stability evident in the family’s situation, the entire episode was labelled as a “very, very sad story.” The man now faces serious legal consequences, including charges of concealing a corpse, defrauding the state, impersonation, and public dishonesty. The Registry Office of the municipality of Borgo Virgilio is spearheading the investigation into this convoluted case.
