Man Foiled in Attempt to Smuggle £7,500 Worth of Cocaine Under His Wig Onto Flight: Authorities

A man has been apprehended by authorities for allegedly attempting to transport cocaine with a street value of £7,500 onto a flight under his wig. The suspect, a 40-year-old individual from Pereira, was reportedly trying to board a flight from Cartagena to Amsterdam when he was intercepted by Anti-Narcotics Police during a routine security check. According to a video clip shared by the Colombian National Police, officers discovered the narcotics concealed under his toupee.
The authorities revealed that the quantity of cocaine concealed by the man was valued at over £7,500, as per a news release issued on Monday, February 24. Police officials further disclosed that the cocaine was ingeniously concealed within capsules disguised within the wig. They also shared footage showing the moment when the wig was dismantled, uncovering the hidden drugs, which were subsequently subjected to a screening test.
The incident occurred on Thursday, February 20, as reported by the BBC. After conducting a Homologated Preliminary Identification Test (PIPH) on the substance found, police verified that it indeed tested positive for cocaine, in line with details from the news release. The suspect had purportedly planned to journey to Amsterdam, where it was suspected he intended to traffic the illicit substance.
In addition to thwarting the smuggling attempt, authorities stated that as a result of the arrest, criminal earnings were depleted, and the distribution of over 400 units of cocaine was prevented. It was also disclosed that the individual in question possessed an existing criminal record associated with drug trafficking. Consequently, the suspect has been remanded to the Attorney General’s Office to face charges related to drug trafficking, manufacturing, and transportation of narcotics.
Brigadier General Gelver Yecid Peña Araque, the commander of the Metropolitan Police of Cartagena, proclaimed that over 450 individuals had been apprehended on drug-related charges this year alone. Notably, more than 115 kilograms of hallucinogens, including marijuana, coca base, and cocaine, have been seized in the process.
