A daycare worker in Indiana has been charged after allegedly admitting to slapping a two-year-old child. Joyce Perkins, 31, is facing charges of battery on a person under 14 years old following an incident in November 2024 at Kiddie Academy in Greenwood, Ind.
According to court documents cited by various news outlets, including WRTV, Fox 59, and WTHR, police responded to the incident and reviewed surveillance footage that purportedly shows Perkins hitting the child. In statements to investigators, Perkins claimed, “I had to smack him because he spit all in my face.”
Perkins went on to explain that she did not intend to harm the child, as he did not cry in response to the incident. The daycare centre took action upon becoming aware of the alleged incident and promptly terminated Perkins’ employment, as confirmed by the centre’s director, Aaron Pankratz.
The daycare released a statement to WRTV, stating, “The state licensing authority conducted a thorough investigation and confirmed that we responded appropriately and took every possible measure within our control to address the situation.” It remains unclear whether Perkins has entered a plea or sought legal representation.
The Johnson County Prosecutor’s office has been contacted for comment but did not respond before publication.
