North Dakota Zoo Welcomes Adorable Baby Giraffe

The Roosevelt Park Zoo in North Dakota is buzzing with excitement as they announce the birth of a baby giraffe. The male calf, born to proud parents Kianga and Kioni on November 2nd, has captured the hearts of all who have laid eyes on him.

Weighing in at a whopping 145 pounds, this little bundle of joy has been described as “wobbly” by zoo staff. With his charming and endearing nature, he is already melting the hearts of visitors at the zoo.

Kianga, aged 25, and Kioni, aged 4, are said to be doing well after the birth of their newest addition. This calf marks Kianga’s 11th offspring at the zoo, while it is the first for Kioni. The bond between mother and baby is evident, as seen in a heartwarming video shared by the zoo on social media.

The pair will be spending some private time bonding in the Giraffe Building before making an appearance in the African Plains Building for visitors to enjoy. Those keen to get up close and personal with these majestic animals can participate in daily giraffe feedings at 2 p.m., with proceeds contributing to conservation efforts.

Giraffes are currently facing a “silent extinction,” with their populations decreasing due to factors such as poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict. The Roosevelt Park Zoo is dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of giraffes and other endangered species through their conservation programs.

Dr. Logan Wood, the zoo director, expressed his delight at the arrival of the new calf, emphasising the importance of care and conservation in ensuring the well-being of these animals. Chelsea Mihalick, the zoo curator, highlighted the role of strong animal welfare practices in nurturing new life at the zoo.

Baby giraffes, known to gestate for around 15 months, are born standing at an impressive 6 feet tall. Within their first week, they can grow up to 3 centimeters per day. These adorable creatures are born with soft, cartilaginous nubs on their heads, which later develop into their iconic horns.

The birth of this baby giraffe symbolises hope and joy at the Roosevelt Park Zoo, where they continue to provide a safe and nurturing environment for their beloved giraffe family.
