A Virginia Man Arrested in Florida After Allegedly Assaulting Mother and Abandoning Newborn in Snow

A 20-year-old man from Virginia was recently apprehended in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, over 900 miles away from his alleged crime scene. The suspect, Darvin Flores Caballeros, stands accused of assaulting and strangling the mother of his 13-day-old baby before abandoning the infant in the snow and fleeing to another state.
Caballeros now faces a laundry list of charges, including malicious wounding, strangulation, child endangerment, assault and battery on a family member, petit larceny, and an emergency protective order. The arrest was carried out as a result of active warrants issued by the Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia following the incident on February 12.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office in Florida disclosed that Caballeros had reportedly engaged in a physical altercation with the baby’s mother, resulting in her sustaining serious injuries. During the altercation, he purportedly dropped the newborn in the snow before making a getaway on foot. Fortunately, a passerby discovered the abandoned baby in the snow, prompting immediate medical attention for the child’s mother.
After a brief search, law enforcement officials managed to locate Caballeros and placed him under arrest in Santa Rosa Beach. The suspect was found riding as a passenger in a vehicle during a “felony stop,” as depicted in photos shared by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.
Following his apprehension, Caballeros was transported to the Walton County Jail where he awaits extradition back to Virginia.
