The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the skier had veered off-course, leading him to become disorientated and ultimately trapped in a tree well – an air pocket formed around a tree’s trunk that prevented snow accumulation. In a stroke of ingenuity and resilience, the man utilized pine boughs to keep warm and even managed to start a small fire for survival.

Upon extraction from the tree well, a heartening video captured the man being airlifted into a helicopter in good condition by Two Bear Air Rescue. Subsequent medical checks at Blacktail Lodge confirmed his stable condition, with authorities attributing his survival to his resourcefulness and survival skills honed over the years.
