A Wyoming police officer, Parker Smith, faced a harrowing experience when he responded to a crash involving his own family that left his 2-year-old son seriously injured. The incident unfolded on Wednesday, Feb. 12, as State Trooper Smith rushed to the scene of a vehicle crash that had resulted in grave injuries to a young child. To his shock, he discovered that the crash involved his own family’s minivan, carrying his wife and two sons.

The youngest of his children, Christian, aged 2, had to be airlifted to a hospital in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, before being transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Colorado. A fundraising page set up by the Wyoming State Troopers shed light on the extent of Christian’s injuries, which included a collapsed lung, fractured ribs, jaw, and skull, among other serious wounds. Christian was placed on a ventilator, necessitating intensive and ongoing care to address his multiple injuries. Thankfully, Parker’s wife Aby and his oldest son PJ emerged from the crash with minor injuries.
A week after the distressing accident, on Feb. 19, Parker provided an update on Christian’s condition. The young boy had suffered a stroke on the right side of his brain, rendering him unable to move his left arm or leg. Furthermore, Christian’s jaw was broken in three places, and he had been experiencing seizures, leading to his continued stay in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Despite these challenges, there was a glimmer of hope as Christian showed signs of progress, such as breathing on his own and even managing to utter heartfelt words to his mother.
The crash itself occurred when a snowplow collided with the Smiths’ minivan at around 8 a.m. on Feb. 12, according to Wyoming Highway Patrol Lt. Andrew Frye. The Wyoming State Troopers launched a support page to gather donations that would go towards aiding Christian’s recovery and alleviating the Smith family’s turmoil during this trying period.
