Two individuals who lost their lives after being swept from a pier have been identified as a surfer and his friend who attempted to save him. The incident occurred on October 22, with the men ultimately being found “unresponsive in the water” as severe weather conditions affected the area.
The Victoria Police were informed of the distressing situation that unfolded at Frankston Beach in Australia. According to reports, the surfer was a 36-year-old British national, while his companion was 43 years old. Detective Inspector Melissa Nixon highlighted that the surfer lacked experience and emphasised that the weather conditions at the time were unfavourable for surfing.
First responders were dispatched to the scene following reports of the two men encountering difficulties in the water. It was revealed that the surfer’s board broke, prompting his acquaintance to leap into the water in an attempt to assist. However, both individuals soon found themselves struggling against the elements.
Efforts were made to rescue the men, involving the deployment of the Air Wing team to assist in their retrieval from the water. Despite these efforts, they could not be revived. The tragic victims were residents of Frankston, a suburb of Melbourne, with the surfer being British and his friend aged 43.
Detective Inspector Nixon reiterated the inexperience of the surfer and emphasised the unsuitability of the weather conditions for water activities, regardless of one’s proficiency. She stressed the importance of exercising caution during adverse weather conditions to prevent such heartbreaking incidents from reoccurring.
