Nicolas Cage has revealed the significant physical transformation he underwent to portray the legendary NFL coach and broadcaster John Madden in the upcoming biopic, aptly titled *Madden*. As the film gears up for its release, Cage spoke about the challenges of gaining weight for the role and the subsequent struggle of returning to his normal physique.
The 62-year-old actor attended the Los Angeles premiere of *Madden* with his wife, Riko Shibata, on November 4. During an interview on the red carpet, Cage shared that he gained a substantial 25 pounds for the depiction of Madden — a man known not only for his coaching success with the Oakland Raiders but also for his engaging broadcasting style that captivated football fans for decades.

Cage detailed his diet during the weight gain phase, stating, “I just enjoyed my pasta and my sourdough bread, which I don’t normally do.” He also mentioned adhering to a strict regimen of two protein shakes and one meal daily, often a Caesar salad. However, he supplemented his weight gain with prosthetics to enhance his portrayal, saying, “I’m not going to gain 60 pounds. That’s dangerous,” indicating a mindful approach to his body at an age where maintaining health is paramount.
Collaborating closely with renowned prosthetics and makeup artist Adrien Morot, Cage applied a method similar to that of Brendan Fraser, who won an Oscar for *The Whale* through a transformative process. “It was the same approach, a hybrid approach,” Cage explained, emphasising that this technique provided him with the ideal balance for embodying Madden.

*Madden* explores the life and career of its titular character, venturing through his iconic moments as both a coach and a television analyst. Christian Bale joins Cage in the cast, portraying Al Davis, the former owner of the Oakland Raiders who passed away in 2011. The film reflects on Madden’s legacy, particularly in the realm of sports video games, a genre he significantly influenced before passing away in December 2021 at the age of 85.
While noting the physical gain was manageable, Cage admitted that shedding the added weight has not been as straightforward. “Not really,” he responded when asked about the ease of losing the weight. “A lot of days in the gym on the elliptical. I still do it. I’m always on the elliptical for a couple of hours a day.” This routine highlights his commitment to regaining his previous physique and indicates a dedication that transcends the role.
The film features an ensemble cast, including Kathryn Hahn as Virginia Fields, John Madden’s wife; Sienna Miller as Carol Sagal, the wife of Al Davis; and John Mulaney, who plays Trip Hawkins, the founder of Electronic Arts and pivotal figure behind the Madden NFL video game series. The rich cast adds depth to the narrative, promising an engaging view into Madden’s multifaceted life.
During his time on the red carpet, Cage reflected on the deeper aspects of portraying Madden. He discovered that at the heart of Madden’s character was a profound love for life, complemented by a vibrant sense of humour. “He was a teacher first and foremost,” Cage noted, drawing a parallel to his own father’s career in education, which deepened his appreciation for the role. “I grew to love him even more,” he acknowledged, revealing how his initial lack of interest in football made the transformation into Madden even more appealing.
As *Madden* prepares to captivate audiences, it is set for a limited theatre release on November 11, before being made available for streaming on Prime Video globally from November 18. With Cage’s heartfelt commitment and physical transformation, the film promises to honour the legendary figure that was John Madden, blending entertainment with an exploration of his extraordinary life.
