In a revealing interview with PEOPLE, Kevin McEnroe reflects on his tumultuous upbringing and the long shadow cast by addiction in his family. The son of renowned tennis player John McEnroe and actress Tatum O’Neal, Kevin discusses his struggles with a family history rife with substance abuse, particularly on his mother’s side. He candidly shares his journey of recovery and the impact it has had not only on his life but also on his relationships with his family.

“I thought our genes were cursed,” Kevin conveyed, acknowledging the challenging legacy he feels is tied to his familial bloodline. As he embarked on the path of recovery and sobriety, he began documenting his experiences through his Substack newsletter, Serenity Side Down, where he addresses the realities of addiction and the importance of healing.
Addressing the difficulties he faced growing up, Kevin recalled his parents’ divorce in 1992 when he was just six years old. He, along with his siblings—Sean, 39, and Emily, 35—initially navigated a shared custody arrangement. However, as his mother’s drug problems escalated, custody was relinquished to their father. “She’s had a drug problem for as long as I can remember,” Kevin stated, sharing insights into the challenges he faced as a child witnessing his mother’s struggle with addiction.
Kevin fondly recounted his mother’s battle, explaining how her relationship with heroin began at a young age. “When my mom was 27, she met a young guy who introduced her to heroin and from then on, I was worried about her,” he revealed. His upbringing was marked by secrecy and silence, conditioning him to conceal his true feelings for fear of drawing attention to the family’s issues.
Continuing to pursue his passion for writing throughout his life, college offered Kevin a turning point when he was encouraged by a professor to embrace storytelling as a means of self-expression. This encouragement ignited his writing career, leading him to take night jobs in bars while producing content about his personal experiences.
Despite achieving a book deal for his first novel, *Our Town*, which centred around his grandmother’s life and struggles, Kevin’s substance use spiralled. He turned to various substances while battling the demons that loomed due to his familial ties. “I thought our genes were cursed,” he remarked, resigning himself to a sense of hopelessness as he battled addiction, culminating in a severe health crisis in 2020 that resulted in liver failure.
It was during his time in recovery that Kevin found inspiration and support, particularly from his recovering sister, Emily. “That gave me this idea that people could change,” he explained. With newfound clarity, he began writing again, eventually creating his Substack platform to share his narrative of struggle and triumph.
Kevin acknowledged the emotional toll his writing can take on his family, stating, “There is a part that is hard for my family to sometimes read about somebody they love hurting themselves.” His father, John McEnroe, expressed a sense of difficulty in reading about Kevin’s struggles but also noted the therapeutic benefit of his son’s writing journey. “Writing has made him feel good about himself and so to see him have that opportunity, there’s nothing better than that,” he shared.
The saga of healing reached a new milestone with Kevin’s wedding to actress Fern Cozine on June 14, 2025. In his Substack, he reflected on the joy he felt that day as he celebrated the merging of families. “It was a dream,” he wrote, expressing gratitude for the support and love surrounding him.
A poignant moment during the nuptials highlighted the evolving dynamics within the family. Kevin recounts how he initially suggested his mother sit with Fern’s family because she had no other relatives present. However, his father insisted that she should sit with them, reinforcing the importance of family unity. “It moved me to no end — that’s family,” he noted, reflecting on how this small act represented significant progress in their relationships.
Kevin McEnroe’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of addiction and the potential for reconciliation and healing within families torn apart by substance abuse. As he navigates his path forward, he maintains an open dialogue about his experiences, fostering a sense of hope and encouragement for others facing similar battles.
