Joanna Gaines, co-host of the popular HGTV show *Fixer Upper*, has recently recounted her journey into homeschooling her children during the early years of the series. In a candid conversation on the podcast *Not Gonna Lie*, hosted by Kylie Kelce, Joanna shared insights into the chaos of raising five children while successfully managing a burgeoning television career alongside her husband, Chip Gaines.

Joanna and Chip, who began their journey on *Fixer Upper* in 2013, initially had little understanding of the show’s potential. Reflecting on those early days, Joanna admitted, “We were so naive getting into it… we honestly didn’t know what it was going to become.” The couple, having no prior experience with HGTV or similar shows, thought the programme would merely serve as an advertisement for their business rather than the successful venture it would soon evolve into.

As the popularity of *Fixer Upper* soared, Joanna and Chip found themselves occupied with renovating 18 to 25 homes annually while also expanding their business ventures. Amid this whirlwind, Joanna revealed that they turned to homeschooling for their children: Drake (21), Duke (18), Emmie (16), Ella (20), and Crew (8). She explained that from the outset, getting the children to school on time proved challenging, leading the couple to adopt a homeschooling approach to balance their busy schedules.
Reflecting on the magnitude of their life events during that period, Joanna remarked, “I think back and wonder how we managed it all with such young kids.” She articulated a sense of nostalgia for the chaotic but rewarding journey they undertook together, stating, “Chip and I have always thrived in chaos. From the day we got married, we were doing things we probably shouldn’t have been doing, and then they worked out pretty well.”
Joanna’s podcast appearance also highlighted the evolving dynamics in her family, particularly regarding the prospect of having more children. In a surprising turn of events, she revealed that Chip has expressed a desire for another baby, jokingly announcing to their family and friends that Joanna is already pregnant. Joanna laughed off this claim, clarifying that although she had originally envisioned a large family, Chip had not always been on board with that idea.
“When I had Crew at 40, I said, ‘Chip, I want him to have more siblings,’” Joanna recalled. “I really thought I’d have nine children. I’m that lady. Look at my hair — don’t I look like a lady that would have nine kids? And he was not open to it. Guess who’s open to it now? At 48?” Her light-hearted comments emphasise the playful rapport between the couple as they navigate the challenges of family life together.
Despite being recently confronted with the humorous suggestion of expanding their family, Joanna remained firm, clarifying that she is not currently expecting a baby. She recounted a moment when Chip playfully urged her to share the supposed news with his parents during a football game, illustrating the couple’s characteristic banter.
Joanna Gaines, known for her down-to-earth nature and authenticity, continues to inspire many with her ability to balance family life and a thriving business. Her reflections on homeschooling and family dynamics offer a glimpse into the complexities and joys of parenting as well as the unpredictable path of fame that she and her husband have taken together.
As the Gaines family continues to grow and evolve, Joanna’s stories resonate with parents navigating similar dilemmas. The combination of unconditional love, humour, and a sense of adventure remains a foundation for Joanna and Chip as they journey forward with their five children, all the while continuing to build their legacy in home renovation and lifestyle branding.
