Whataburger, the iconic burger chain with deep Texas roots, has built a remarkable legacy since its inception in 1950. Founded in Corpus Christi by Harmon Dobson, Whataburger began as a modest burger stand, aiming to create a massive burger so delightful that customers would exclaim, “What a burger!” upon tasting it. Today, the franchise has expanded significantly, boasting over 1,100 locations across 17 states, while maintaining its strong association with Texas.

The very first Whataburger was established on August 8, 1950, setting the stage for the brand’s unique concept. The burger was designed to be large and satisfying, requiring both hands to hold. The success of this idea was quickly recognised, and by 1953, the first franchise was opened in Alice, Texas.

In 1961, Whataburger introduced its distinctive A-frame architectural design with a new store in Odessa, Texas. Tragically, the founder’s journey ended in 1967 when Harmon Dobson died in a plane crash. However, his wife, Grace Dobson, showcased remarkable resilience by refusing to sell the company. Taking over as chairwoman of the board in 1969, she continued to build the organisation in honour of her late husband. Under her leadership, Whataburger saw considerable growth, marking its expansion beyond Texas to Florida in 1959, and later adding locations in Tennessee and Arizona in 1963.
By 1980, Whataburger had achieved a significant milestone, with 300 restaurants in operation. The chain now employs over 51,000 individuals, referred to as Family Members, and prides itself on being open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making it a reliable option for diners at any hour.
Whataburger has become synonymous with Texas culture and was designated a “Texas Treasure” by the state legislature in 2001. Texas Representative Jaime Capelo, who introduced the resolution, expressed that the Dobson family had won the hearts and taste buds of countless Texans. This honour reflects the brand’s importance to the local community and its significant contributions to the state’s culinary scene.
The menu at Whataburger features a variety of offerings celebrated by fans, particularly its made-to-order burgers crafted from 100% beef. Customers can personalise their burgers with options such as grilled jalapeños, multiple slices of cheese, and extra bacon, all served on a toasted five-inch bun. Additionally, the chain’s famous orange-and-white striped building and unique condiments, including their renowned Fancy Ketchup, have become hallmarks of the Whataburger experience.
In recent years, the chain has made strides in addressing social issues, particularly focusing on food insecurity. In 2021, Whataburger established the “Feeding Student Success” programme, aiming to tackle food scarcity among students through community investments, scholarships, and resource rooms. To date, the company has generously donated over $8 million to this cause, reflecting its commitment to supporting educational initiatives and the welfare of its community.
The brand has also remained a popular gathering place for celebrations. Following significant political wins in the 2026 elections, newly-elected officials James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa chose to commemorate their victories at Whataburger. A photo posted on social media showed the two with Whataburger cups aloft, demonstrating the deep cultural ties that the restaurant holds within Texas’s political landscape.
In 2019, Whataburger underwent a change in ownership when it was acquired by BDT Capital Partners. This strategic move aimed to facilitate the chain’s expansion while staying true to the essence of the brand, ensuring that it continues to resonate with its loyal customer base.
As Whataburger continues to evolve and expand, the dedication to the original vision set by Harmon Dobson remains unwavering. Today, the establishment is not merely a fast-food restaurant; it embodies a sense of pride, care, and community, solidifying its place as a cherished institution in American dining. With a commitment to quality and local engagement, Whataburger stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its Texan heritage.
