MSC Cruises has announced the cancellation of a sailing for its MSC Poesia ship following its detention by the U.S. Coast Guard in Miami. The decision comes after the ship was held at port due to deficiencies found during a routine inspection.

The U.S. Coast Guard’s Miami Port State Control team conducted an inspection on Sunday, November 1, and subsequently detained the vessel. In a statement issued on November 3, Captain Frank Florio, Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Miami, highlighted that the inspection had revealed certain deficiencies concerning systems onboard the ship. While the specific details of these issues remain undisclosed, the Coast Guard emphasised the importance of addressing them before the MSC Poesia is permitted to resume operation.

The Coast Guard’s role in this situation falls under its Port State Control programme, which aims to ensure that foreign-flagged commercial vessels adhere to safety, security, and environmental regulations while in U.S. ports. As the inspection process is ongoing, the ship will remain in custody until MSC Cruises rectifies the identified problems.

In a statement regarding the situation, MSC Cruises expressed regret over the disruption caused to its guests. The cruise line confirmed that it had opted to cancel the current sailing of the Poesia, acknowledging that this news would be disappointing for those onboard. “We recognise how disappointing and frustrating this news is for our guests, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption to their holiday,” a representative stated.
The cruise line explained that the cause of the cancellation was a regulatory matter that needed resolution prior to the ship’s intended departure. Unfortunately, despite efforts to resolve the issue before the planned setting sail, the matter could not be addressed in time, leading to the decision to cancel the voyage.
Reports indicate that over 2,000 people were onboard the MSC Poesia at the time of its detention. The vessel has a capacity to accommodate approximately 2,550 passengers. It was scheduled to embark on a cruise that included stops in several destinations such as Jamaica, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Belize, before returning to Miami on November 12.
MSC Cruises is assuring affected passengers that they will receive full refunds for their cruise fare. Additionally, the company is actively providing assistance to help guests arrange their return home following the unexpected cancellation.
As the situation continues to unfold, the cruise line remains in communication with the U.S. Coast Guard, working to address the deficiencies highlighted during the inspection. The health and safety of guests have been emphasised as a priority for MSC Cruises as they navigate this regulatory challenge.
The MSC Poesia’s detention raises important questions about cruise ship safety and oversight, as authorities work to ensure that standards are upheld. The incident serves as a reminder of the rigorous safety inspections that vessels must undergo to operate in international waters and provide safe travel experiences for their passengers.
