A family in Toronto has become the victim of a harrowing home invasion that has left them grappling with severe injuries. David Morton, a prominent real estate CEO, his wife Doriana Zohil-Morton, and their two daughters were attacked in their luxurious residence situated in the affluent Bridle Path neighbourhood, an area noted for its celebrity inhabitants.

According to the Toronto Police Service, the incident took place late at night when three armed assailants broke into the Morton family home. During the assault, the victims suffered gunshot wounds, with David Morton and his wife also facing brutal attacks with a hammer. It has been reported that two of the family members are grappling with life-altering injuries as a result of the violence.

Following the attack, one of the alleged assailants, Daijohn Richards, presented himself at a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound. The police have confirmed that he is now a prime suspect in the home invasion and has been issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest. After receiving medical treatment, he was discharged from the hospital before authorities could collect enough evidence for an arrest, prompting significant concern among investigators.
The police have clarified that while there was a strong suspicion linking Richards to the attack, they lacked enough evidence to make an immediate arrest. According to their statement, “recognising a potential suspect and having enough evidence to arrest them are two different things.” They emphasised the necessity of having reasonable grounds supported by evidence for any arrest to be legally valid.
In the wake of the incident, Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw defended the department, insisting that there has been no failure on their part. He stated, “We are following the evidence as it becomes available,” reiterating that the investigation is ongoing, and that further actions would be taken if warranted.
The attack has drawn considerable attention, not just due to the grotesque nature of the crimes but also owing to the social standing of the victims. Morton is the CEO of The Mac Group, a well-known real estate business, and the family’s home is located near that of the famous musician Drake, further raising the profile of the case.
Mayor Olivia Chow expressed her outrage and sympathy, labelling the event as an act of “brutal violence.” Commenting on the trauma endured by the affected family, she remarked, “It is difficult to put into words the trauma of experiencing something so horrific in the one place where everyone should feel safest: their own home.”
In a statement, David Morton expressed his deep concerns over the incident, stating that “no family should ever have to experience this.” He emphasised the need for security in one’s home, advocating that people should be able to rest without the fear of intruders threatening their safety.
As investigations continue, police are still searching for two additional suspects involved in the incident. So far, charges have only been formally filed against Richards, which include four counts of discharging a firearm with intent to wound, four counts of robbery while armed, and several aggravated assault charges. The remaining suspects are also considered armed and dangerous.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the home invasion to come forward, asking the public to contact the Toronto Police at specific lines provided for tips related to the ongoing investigation. Despite the traumatic event, the police remain committed to pursuing justice for the Morton family and ensuring safety within the community.
