Marisa Tomei and Liam Neeson star together in the new action-thriller, *The Mongoose*, which debuted in cinemas recently. In the film, Neeson portrays Ryan “Fang” Flanagan, a war hero who finds himself embroiled in a high-stakes car chase after being wrongfully accused of a crime. Tomei takes on the role of Tara, Fang’s ex-wife, providing unwavering support to him throughout his turmoil.

Despite their on-screen separation, the bond between Fang and Tara remains poignantly intact. Tomei noted that the characters share a deep love that transcends their divorce, adding an emotional depth to their narrative. “It’s very romantic because they’re of a certain age, and they’ve both been through, as characters, these brutalities in their lives, but have this very romantic, eternal love between them,” she remarked.

Tomei spoke of the ease with which she and Neeson connected both in and out of character. Their chemistry was evident, as she explained, “Working with Liam flowed very easily, very naturally.” The actress attributed this to Neeson’s leadership qualities, affirming that she found it easy to immerse herself in their dynamic.
Joining a seasoned cast and crew can sometimes induce nerves, and Tomei felt that when she came on board with Neeson and his long-time stunt coordinator, Mark Vanselow, who made his directorial debut with the film. “I’m coming into his playground, right? I’m coming into his team,” she explained, highlighting her initial apprehension about fitting into their established rapport.
Tomei’s experiences filming in Australia were both enjoyable and memorable, even leading to some amusing moments off-set. While Neeson preferred to frequent the Japanese restaurant Nobu, Tomei enjoyed exploring a variety of dining options. “He likes what he likes,” she jested, reflecting on their differing culinary preferences during their time together.
As filming progressed, the two stars developed a relaxed camaraderie, which was evident even in serious moments. She shared a story about a time when Neeson initiated a profound conversation just before an intense scene. “I was like, ‘Oh, this is how chill we are. This is great,’” recalled Tomei. She also mentioned how quickly they could switch back into their roles, attributing this fluidity to their ease with each other.
The mutual respect between the two actors is significant, as Neeson has publicly expressed admiration for Tomei’s talent. He remarked that her presence raised his performance levels while the cameras were rolling, stating, “I felt she raised my game when the camera was turning.” Neeson described her as “dynamic” and expressed a long-standing admiration, emphasising that collaborating with Tomei was a highlight of his career.
In her enthusiasm for the project, Tomei shared that working alongside Neeson was a key factor in her decision to take on the role. “I’ve admired him for a long time,” she said, illustrating her eagerness to share the screen with the renowned actor.
Now screening in theatres, *The Mongoose* promises to deliver not only high-octane action but also a heartfelt story of enduring love, bolstered by the strong performances of its lead actors. As audiences flock to cinemas, both Tomei and Neeson invite viewers to join them on this thrilling journey.
