While on tour with fellow artists Lainey Wilson and Ella Langley, Butts was seeking a cohesive theme for her latest collection of songs. Initially aiming to craft a motivational anthem for her audience, she soon realised her inspiration lay not in a singular message but in the collective tales of those around her in the honky-tonk environment. “I envisioned it as being like Chicago the musical, where I would imagine the lives and performances of people in the honky-tonk from my intimate corner,” the 33-year-old singer explained in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.
Butts vividly describes the personalities she observes during her performances: the solitary figure at the bar, the bustling bartender, the joy of line dancers, and the conversations of friends reassessing their relationships. “Each night brings different stories to light,” she shared. “I wanted to shine a spotlight on these fascinating characters and their unique narratives.” This approach not only reflects her artistry but also underscores her commitment to storytelling through song.

Amidst the challenges of a demanding career, Butts finds solace in her performances, which continue to anchor her. The singer expressed her struggle with the pressures of constant creativity and public engagement, noting how it can often feel overwhelming. “Sometimes it feels like there’s never enough time in the day, and I think many can relate to that constant drive to produce more,” she stated. Her track “What More Could You Want” delves deeper into this sentiment, capturing both the hardships and rewards of performing.
Despite the inherent pressures of life on the road, Butts emphasises the importance of self-care. Reflecting on her recent touring experiences, she stated, “When I’m not on stage, I make it a priority to recuperate — whether that’s indulging in a blanket day or taking my golf cart out for a drive with my music.” The singer, who is married to Cleto Cordero of Flatland Cavalry, recognises the need for downtime to recharge amidst her busy schedule.
As her career accelerates, Butts has identified herself as an “introverted extrovert,” highlighting her need for both social interaction and solitude. “I often hesitate to go out unless I’m feeling my best,” she explained. “I have this underlying desire not to disappoint those who expect a certain persona. The reality is, I have recently emerged from anonymity, and sometimes I crave the quiet observation of a barfly rather than the spotlight.”
Butts also acknowledges the friendship of her fellow musicians, who have played a key role in helping her prioritise her well-being. She recalled Lainey Wilson’s thoughtful gesture of sending her cortisol blockers and Ella Langley’s encouraging advice to say ‘no’ when necessary. “Both of them exemplify the balance of hard work with self-care,” she said, highlighting the supportive connections fostered within the country music community.
With “Hello, Honky Tonk,” Butts aims to whisk her listeners away from their realities into the world of vibrant nightlife and camaraderie that defines the honky-tonk experience. “This album serves as a love letter to the honky-tonk spirit and all the night owls who support my journey in country music,” she articulated. “I hope listeners find joy, fun, and the urge to dance as they escape into the music. I take immense pride in this work.”
As the new album resonates with audiences, Butts prepares for an upcoming tour titled “Hello, Honky Tonk Live and in Person,” promising fans an intimate experience filled with stories and heartfelt performances. The release of “Hello, Honky Tonk” not only marks a significant milestone in Butts’ career but also reinforces her role as a storyteller, bringing the essence of honky-tonk to the forefront of contemporary country music.
