Tasia Papoulias, a content creator based near Manchester, has taken on the ambitious task of transforming her new home into a mid-century modern masterpiece. With a passion for bold design and an eye for creativity, Papoulias has been documenting her renovation journey on TikTok, revealing her process and encouraging others to embrace their unique style.

After purchasing her house with her partner a year ago, Papoulias quickly realised the extent of work required to achieve her vision. “You create the Pinterest board that you want to bring to life and we’ll just make it work,” she recalls her partner saying, demonstrating their shared commitment to the project. This direction gave Papoulias the motivation to delve deep into interior design and gather inspiration from various sources.
While flipping through her Pinterest boards and browsing through interior design books gifted by friends, Papoulias developed a clear aesthetic: full wood walls. “I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll just do one wall and see how that looks,’” she explained. However, the more she explored her design ideas, the more she realised that making a bold statement was essential. “If you’re going to do something, you might as well go all out,” she stated, reflecting on her mindset during the project.
The extensive renovation began with the entire downstairs area of the house, built in the 1930s. Papoulias and her partner faced significant challenges, including ripping up floors and addressing damp issues. “We basically had the shell of the house downstairs,” she explained, underscoring the extent of the work that lay ahead. The atmosphere she desired for her living space was reminiscent of a snug mid-century bar, which drove her design choices.
Initially planned as a modest renovation, the project evolved into a full overhaul. “It’s been a top-to-bottom renovation,” she noted, admitting that her ambitions grew with each room they tackled. As the couple worked on the downstairs, Papoulias developed a fondness for dark wood kitchens and marble worktops. “That slight renovation turned into full new worktops and a real dark wood veneer,” she reminisced about the journey.
Despite facing scepticism from contractors, who suggested limiting the wood paneling to one wall, Papoulias was undeterred. “I needed to find a feasible way to achieve my vision within budget,” she explained. After considerable effort, she discovered plywood sheets, which offered an affordable alternative to the more expensive oak wood veneer commonly found in mid-century homes. Each sheet cost roughly £15, allowing her to furnish and finish the room for under £2,000, a far cry from initial estimates.
As the renovation continues, Papoulias reflects on the challenges of managing her expectations. “Many people see something online and think it’s exactly what they want, but then you find out that it’s not realistic,” she said, sharing her experience as a homeowner trying to balance dreams with practicality. This has also prompted her to discover personal preferences in interior design that genuinely resonate with her.
Throughout her renovation journey, Papoulias has built a community on TikTok, bonding with other interior design enthusiasts. She finds joy in exchanging ideas and solutions, particularly for individuals seeking budget-friendly alternatives to high-cost designs. “It’s comforting to share these experiences with others who appreciate this style,” she remarked.
In terms of encouraging others, Papoulias advocates for taking risks in design. “If you love something, don’t be afraid to take the leap,” she advised. She believes experimentation can lead to rewarding outcomes, stating that changes can usually be made without significant difficulty. This message aims to empower viewers to trust their instincts when curating their spaces.
As her wood-paneled living room takes shape, Papoulias insists that personal passion is key. “You should create a home and a space that you love,” she stated emphatically. For her, the house is not just a physical space, but a living, breathing environment that reflects her identity. Although renovations are ongoing, she embraces the journey, recognising that a home is never truly finished.
“It’s the first room I come into to escape the world,” she added, highlighting the importance of personal space in creating comfort and sanctuary. With every transformation she makes, Papoulias continues to foster her vision of style, proving that with creativity, determination, and a little ingenuity, anyone can create a home they adore.
