A retired teacher has raised concerns about the operational issues aboard a luxury cruise ship shortly before it became stranded in Cambodia, highlighting alarming instances of food shortages and financial demands from the shipping company. Sharon Lane, 78, an enthusiastic cruiser, exited The Odyssey in August due to health complications, just months prior to the distressing situation that left over 200 passengers in a precarious predicament.

In an interview on Thursday, 29 October, Lane shared her troubling experiences aboard the ship before her departure. Despite selling most of her belongings to support what she intended to be 15 years of life at sea, health issues prompted her to leave The Odyssey earlier than planned. Lane has since settled in a sparsely furnished apartment in Orange County, California, and stated unequivocally that she has no intention of stepping foot on another ship again.

The crisis intensified when Villa Vie Residency, the Florida-based company responsible for operating The Odyssey, issued an ultimatum to remaining passengers. On 28 October, the company gave less than 24 hours’ notice to evacuate the ship docked in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The decision stemmed from soaring fuel costs, which the company attributed to the war in Iran, significantly affecting shipping routes and operations.

When discussing her time on the ship, Lane recounted numerous instances of inadequate sustenance. She revealed that passengers experienced long stretches without proper meals, stating, “They went from lunchtime to almost 7 o’clock,” adding that the only offerings were cookies, which did little to satisfy the hunger of those onboard. She voiced her disbelief at the company’s reaction when passengers resorted to hoarding food, suggesting it was a direct consequence of inadequate provision.
Additionally, Lane reflected on the operational state of The Odyssey, describing a disconcerting period where the ship seemingly floated aimlessly, without propulsion, a situation she compared to being adrift at sea. Lane indicated that the company began requesting additional payments for fuel, a demand she found unreasonable, particularly for passengers who lacked the financial resources to contribute. “I went, ‘They got to be out of their minds. How dare they?’” she remarked, noting that many on board were reliant on Social Security and had previously sold much of their wealth to fund their time on the ship.
Her concerns were not just personal; Lane emphasised that many of her friends onboard were in vulnerable financial positions and were not provided with any assistance, such as hotel vouchers upon disembarkation in Cambodia. This lack of support has added to the sense of disarray surrounding the evacuation efforts.
In a press release, Villa Vie Residency attempted to explain their challenges, citing initiatives implemented since the onset of the conflict in February to reduce fuel consumption, including altering itineraries and spending more time in port. Despite these measures, they admitted that the increasing fuel costs had rendered their financial model unsustainable. The company has expressed a commitment to restructuring and recapitalisation efforts over the next two months, emphasising their intent to prioritise the well-being of the remaining residents, crew, and employees amidst the turmoil.
As the situation unfolded, questions have been raised regarding the adequacy of the company’s communication and support for passengers during such a critical period. Lane, who spent a significant amount—over £200,000—on her accommodation aboard The Odyssey, has become a voice of dissent in light of the cruise line’s management.
Reflecting on her experiences, Lane concluded her remarks with a note of finality, expressing her disillusionment with the industry she once loved. “I won’t do it now,” she affirmed, indicating a definitive end to her cruising aspirations.
As the crisis continues to develop, affected passengers and observers alike are waiting to see how Villa Vie Residency will navigate the complexities of this situation, particularly with regard to the support and resolution offered to those who were left stranded.
