Patrick Mahomes, star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, has recently spoken on the team’s controversial signing of kicker Justin Tucker, who has faced significant scrutiny in light of past allegations. Tucker, who was previously suspended for ten games due to serious misconduct allegations involving over a dozen women, has not featured in an NFL game since his suspension. The Chiefs are the first team to provide him with a contract following this incident.

The history between Mahomes and Tucker includes a notable incident during a playoff encounter in January 2024. At that time, tensions arose on the field when Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce reacted to Tucker, then of the Baltimore Ravens, by kicking the kicker’s footballs into the stands. This was after Tucker left his equipment on the field while Mahomes was warming up for a crucial playoff game.

In a press conference held on Wednesday, 28 October, Mahomes was questioned regarding his current rapport with Tucker now that they are teammates. He admitted that they had not engaged in numerous conversations previously, mainly due to their affiliations with opposing teams. However, he was quick to dismiss any notions of lingering hostility, stating, “It wasn’t like we had any beef or anything. I think at that moment, it was just competitors being competitors.”

Mahomes elaborated on the competitive nature that typically accompanies high-stakes games, particularly those within the playoffs. “It was a big moment for everybody’s career,” he noted, referring to the intensity of the AFC Championship game. The quarterback highlighted that while emotions may have run high during that match, it was essential to move on and not harbour resentments. “At the end of the day, you’re just playing a game, and you want to compete and you want to win,” he said.
When asked directly about his thoughts on Tucker joining the Chiefs, Mahomes remained somewhat noncommittal. He stated, “I try not to get too high or too low on anything,” emphasising his focus on the overall team dynamics rather than individual situations. He remarked that the Chiefs have a history of recruiting talented players, which gave him confidence in management’s decision-making.
Tucker’s acquisition coincides with the Chiefs’ recent struggles, exemplified by missed field goals from current kicker Harrison Butker during a disappointing 20-3 defeat against the Seattle Seahawks. This event prompted the team’s administration to seek options to bolster their kicking game.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid also addressed the team’s decision to sign Tucker. He commented on Tucker’s completion of his suspension, indicating that the team had evaluated the situation comprehensively before proceeding. Reid conveyed a straightforward approach by stating, “Yeah, so, he’s done his suspension, you know. Took care of that business there,” thus hinting that the past should remain unexamined as they move forward.
Looking ahead, Mahomes indicated that the team’s priority is to sort out underlying issues before facing the Denver Broncos on Sunday, 1 November. He acknowledged the necessity for the team to improve and prepare thoroughly for the critical upcoming fixture. “We have a lot of stuff that we have to clean up…I think that’s the biggest thing for us,” he concluded, underlining the importance of a cohesive unit in achieving success on the field.
The decision to bring Tucker into the fold may raise eyebrows among fans and analysts alike, given the gravity of his past allegations. Nonetheless, the Chiefs’ management appears committed to revitalising their squad ahead of the challenging weeks to come as they strive for victory within the competitive landscape of the NFL.
