Alicia Schweickert, a 37-year-old woman from Marion, Illinois, has become a symbol of resilience and hope following her harrowing medical battles with congenital heart disease. Born with a severe heart condition, she has undergone a series of surgeries since infancy, fighting against all odds to lead a fulfilling life.
Schweickert’s journey began shortly after her birth when, at just six weeks of age, she turned blue while breastfeeding. An urgent trip to the hospital revealed that she was suffering from hypoplastic left heart syndrome and a double outlet right ventricle. In a bid to correct these severe congenital anomalies, she underwent an experimental bidirectional Glenn procedure at two months old, followed by a Fontan procedure when she was only one year old. This significant surgery restructured her heart to allow for proper blood circulation.

For many years, Alicia enjoyed a relatively normal childhood despite her medical history. She engaged in typical activities such as attending school dances and spending time with friends, although she faced limitations when it came to physical activities. However, by the time she reached her early thirties, her health began to decline. In 2022, at 33, she started experiencing troubling symptoms, including shortness of breath and excessive fluid retention.
By November of that year, medical professionals officially diagnosed her with heart failure. Tragically, they also discovered that her liver had begun to fail due to the long-term effects of the Fontan procedure. Faced with the prospect of needing both heart and liver transplants, Alicia was placed on the transplant list. Her situation quickly worsened, necessitating her admission to hospital in early January 2024.

Fortunately, after a month of waiting, Alicia received the life-saving transplants she desperately needed on 6th February 2024. Both her heart and liver came from the same donor, providing a new lease of life. However, her recovery was not without complications. Just six days post-surgery, she awoke in intensive care and spent an additional month in the hospital battling various health issues, including fluid accumulation in her lungs.
Alicia’s struggle was far from over. By September 2024, she needed dialysis due to kidney failure, a daunting blow after undergoing two organ transplants. “It was incredibly difficult to remain positive during this time,” she shared. Yet, she drew strength from her late father, David Schweickert, who had been her steadfast supporter until his passing in 2019. “I wanted to make him proud, and that kept me going,” she recalled.
In March 2025, Alicia received encouraging news: her kidneys had miraculously recovered, allowing her to come off dialysis and regain some semblance of normalcy. With her health stabilising, she decided to pursue her lifelong dream of helping others by training as a paediatric cardiology nurse. This motivation pushed her back to education, where she excelled, achieving a 4.0 GPA and subsequently gaining admission into nursing school.
Throughout her journey, Alicia has expressed deep gratitude for her organ donor’s family, whom she reached out to in hopes of conveying her appreciation. Though she has not received a response, Alicia reflects on the invaluable gift she was given and cherishes the life it has afforded her. “I have more time with my family and the opportunity to realise my dream of helping patients,” she stated.
Today, Alicia thrives in her new role as a student nurse, eager to support others facing similar health challenges. With an enhanced quality of life, she is no longer restricted by her previous conditions and can partake fully in life’s activities. “I can run without being short of breath. I am so grateful for every day,” she affirmed.
As she embarks on this new chapter, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with her ongoing health journey. Alicia’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the profound impact of hope, faith, and determination in the face of adversity.
