Former NBA star Paul Pierce has recently divulged his financial struggles amid an ongoing custody dispute with his ex-girlfriend, Princess Santiago, with whom he shares a son. In court documents reviewed by PEOPLE, the 49-year-old former Boston Celtics forward revealed he is facing significant financial hardship and feels “drowning financially” after losing his job at Fox Sports last year.

Pierce’s attorney has claimed that the former athlete is currently “tapped out” and has not received any income since his contract with Fox Sports came to an end in August. This development comes as the couple continues to navigate their legal battle over custody and support arrangements for their child, King Rafael, who was welcomed into the world in February 2026.

During a court appearance on 11 August, Pierce was ordered to pay $100,000 in attorney’s fees, due to be settled through a payment plan, as well as an additional $10,000 for the services of a forensic accountant. According to the documents, Pierce’s financial obligations have become overwhelming; they detail a troubling scenario where his previous earnings of approximately £119,000 per month have vanished alongside his job.
His lawyer argued that the attorney and accountant fees imposed on Pierce are no longer representative of his financial situation. “He is unable to keep up with his obligation to pay his own counsel and forensic accountant,” the attorney stated, emphasising the severe strain the custody battle is putting on Pierce’s finances.
The mounting financial pressures have sparked concerns for Pierce, who is reportedly facing child support payments that amount to around £28,000 each month, in addition to about £20,000 designated as spousal support. This precarious financial state is a far cry from Pierce’s peak earnings during his 19-year NBA career, which reportedly netted him around £195 million.
In March, Princess Santiago took steps to solidify their parental responsibilities by filing for legal recognition of Pierce as the father of their child. She requested genetic testing to confirm his paternity and sought sole legal and physical custody of their son, with outlined visitation rights for Pierce. Alongside custody, Santiago requested monthly child support of £29,811, health insurance for their son, and half of all medical costs related to her pregnancy and the subsequent birth.
Following Pierce’s confirmation of paternity, Santiago issued a statement expressing her intent to prioritise stability for their son. “I believe in growth, accountability and healthy co-parenting,” she said. “Paul has finally made an effort to see King and I appreciate that. At this time, I am focused on maintaining stability and consistent, healthy decision-making for our son while he continues building a positive father-son relationship moving forward.”
As Pierce endeavours to navigate both his professional setbacks and the complexities of parenthood, the ramifications of his financial decline and its impact on his family are likely to remain topics of scrutiny in the media. Meanwhile, he continues to strive for a resolution to the custody dispute that respects the needs and wellbeing of his child.
Pierce’s financial difficulties reflect a broader concern many former athletes face when transitioning out of competitive sports, particularly when substantial legal obligations come into play. The challenges experienced during this period of adjustment highlight the importance of financial planning and support systems for individuals who find themselves in similar situations.
This ongoing custody battle not only reveals the personal dimensions of Pierce’s life but also sheds light on the often hidden struggles that accompany the end of a sports career. As he seeks to pave a positive path forward in both his professional and personal life, the outcome of these proceedings will undoubtedly shape his future role as a father.
