Authorities reported that April had reached out to her father approximately half an hour prior to the tragic incident, seeking assistance with what was described as an “episode” involving her husband, Emir Manals, aged 54. When her father arrived at their home and was unable to get a response, he returned home to retrieve a key and subsequently called the police to perform a welfare check.
The police, responding to the report, arrived at the Manals’ residence but did not receive an answer. They deployed drones to search the property, which led them to discover the bodies inside. Emir was found deceased next to April, who is now facing a lengthy recovery process, as indicated in a GoFundMe campaign set up by her friends and family.

The campaign has been launched to support April during her recovery, which is expected to involve extensive rehabilitation and trauma therapy. Those fundraising for her described her as a resilient individual with a generous spirit, noting her dedication to her family and friends. “April is a tough cookie with a kind heart,” the campaign stated, highlighting her role as a supportive friend and a loving aunt.
Friends of the couple have suggested that Emir was struggling with mental health issues, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Erica Laue, a close friend, spoke about the challenges posed by Emir’s conditions, explaining that both he and April were actively trying to manage the situation together. “It was not an easy diagnosis to live with and love someone through,” Laue remarked.

Prior to this distressing event, April was regarded as the primary breadwinner, as the couple navigated Emir’s mental health challenges. Their situation illustrates the complexities of domestic life amidst mental illness, further emphasising the need for awareness and support for families dealing with similar issues.
The couple’s dog, a rescue named Asher, was also found deceased in their home, a tragic detail that has added to the sorrow surrounding the incident. The fundraiser mentioned that Asher was a recent addition to their family, bringing joy and companionship to the couple.
April’s family and friends are now rallying to provide her with the financial support she needs, hoping to alleviate some of the burdens she will face in the coming months. “She’s the dog mom who adopts the ten-year-old rescue mutt everyone else walked past,” read the GoFundMe description, showcasing her compassionate nature.
As the investigation continues, the community is coming together to support April in her time of need, displaying a powerful response in the midst of tragedy. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potentially devastating effects of mental health struggles and the importance of seeking help and support.
