Hormel Foods has unveiled a new approach to bacon packaging that promises to enhance freshness and reduce waste. Launched on 22 October 2023, their Black Label Portion Pack Bacon is designed with convenience in mind, featuring individually sealed portions to cater to the needs of today’s consumers.

Each pack contains twelve slices of bacon, divided into three separate sections of four slices each. This innovative packaging allows users to prepare only the amount of bacon they require, while the remaining portions remain sealed and fresh. The 12-ounce packages are now available at select Walmart, Meijer, and Albertsons stores, with a retail price ranging from £4.74 to £5.78.
The new product aims to tackle the issue of food waste, which has become increasingly important for both consumers and the food industry. Hormel claims that the perforated portions provide flexibility, enabling consumers to enjoy the taste of bacon while managing their food consumption more efficiently. “People can enjoy the bacon they love in a way that fits their lives,” a spokesperson for Hormel Black Label Bacon stated, highlighting the convenience the new packaging offers for various meal occasions, whether it’s a hearty breakfast or a casual dinner.

As well as its practical advantages, the new bacon packs feature high-quality ingredients, including hand-trimmed bellies and proprietary brines. The changes have already sparked positive reactions among consumers, many of whom took to social media to express their enthusiasm for the innovation. One user remarked, “This is genius,” mentioning the difficulty of using up bacon before it spoils and praising the packaging’s smart solution.

Another benefit of the new packaging is its assurance of longer shelf life. According to Allrecipes, unopened raw bacon can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, while opened bacon typically lasts about one week. The Portion Pack Bacon’s individual seals protect the unopened portions from contamination, thus negating the need for additional storage solutions like airtight containers or plastic wrap.
Hormel isn’t alone in its pursuit of bacon innovation. Earlier in 2023, Oscar Mayer introduced a new maple bourbon bacon variety in a bid to attract consumers seeking unique flavours. This product features thick-cut bacon with a taste profile enriched by Evan Williams Bourbon, a move that reflects the dynamic nature of the market and shifting consumer preferences.
By focusing on freshness and practicality, Hormel’s Black Label Portion Pack Bacon aligns with broader trends in the food industry, where convenience and sustainability are increasingly at the forefront of product development. The integration of such innovative packaging solutions assists not only in food preservation but also in addressing the growing concern surrounding food waste.
As convenience continues to play a pivotal role in consumer choices, particularly in the context of meal preparation, Hormel’s latest product is poised to resonate with a wide audience. The Portion Pack Bacon may well set a new standard for how bacon is packaged and enjoyed, marrying quality with practicality.
