A luxury cruise ship suffered significant damage after colliding with two container vessels in Bremerhaven, Germany, over the weekend. The Mein Schiff 3, owned by TUI Cruises, was preparing to set sail for the Canary Islands on October 25 when strong winds caused it to veer off course, leading to the collision.

The incident occurred as the ship was assisted by tugboats, aiming to navigate safely away from the dock. Unfortunately, during the departure, a sudden gust of wind pushed the cruise ship towards the moored container vessels. Eyewitness footage showed the starboard side of the Mein Schiff 3 approaching the MSC Victorine, resulting in a collision where lifeboats and cranes were severely damaged.

Images obtained from reporters on the scene depicted the lifeboats of the Mein Schiff 3 crushed from the impact, while glass barriers along the ship’s edge were also found shattered. Initial reports indicated that the smaller of the two container ships sustained only minor damage, while the larger vessel incurred substantial harm. The collision caused significant structural damage, tearing open a section of the port side.
Fortunately, authorities confirmed that there were no injuries and no water ingress was reported in any of the vessels involved. The Bremen Water Police have since launched an investigation into the incident. A spokesperson for TUI Cruises stated that inspections had revealed the extent of the damage, necessitating repairs at a shipyard in Bremerhaven.
In light of the damage sustained by the Mein Schiff 3, TUI Cruises announced the cancellation of the remainder of the cruise to the Canary Islands. The spokesperson acknowledged that passengers were likely to be disappointed by this decision. “We know how much our guests were looking forward to their cruise and sincerely regret the disappointment and inconvenience this will cause,” they commented. However, they emphasised that prioritising safety was the responsible choice.
As a result of the incident, a sailing ban has been issued by maritime safety authorities, affecting all three vessels involved in the collision. The Mein Schiff 3 has been safely moored in Bremerhaven while repairs are arranged to restore it to operational status.
The cruise ship, which can accommodate 2,506 passengers and first entered service in 2014, is one of several vessels in the TUI Cruises fleet. The accident has sparked concern regarding maritime safety amid stormy weather conditions, which have become increasingly common in the region during autumn.
Industry observers are closely monitoring the situation for further developments as the investigations by the Bremen Water Police continue. Meanwhile, TUI Cruises is expected to provide updates to affected passengers regarding their travel arrangements and the status of future sailings once repairs are completed.
This incident marks a rare but notable collision involving a luxury cruise liner and container ships, raising discussions around the safety measures in place for vessels operating in turbulent maritime conditions. As authorities work to ascertain the full implications of the collision, all eyes will be on TUI Cruises as they navigate the aftermath and work towards ensuring the safety of their fleet.
