Jacob Holt Johnson, 42, from Herriman, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder on October 22, signalling a significant development in a case that has left the community in shock. The incident occurred on December 31, 2024, when police were called to investigate an alleged DUI. Upon arriving at a 7-Eleven gas station in Bluffdale, officers found Johnson unconscious in his Jeep Compass, parked awkwardly across multiple stalls.

During the routine check, police made a gruesome discovery. Investigators found Roney’s body inside a cardboard box in the vehicle’s trunk. According to the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s office, she was unresponsive and cold to the touch, with an extension cord around her neck and visible bruising on her arms, legs, and head.
Further examination of the Jeep uncovered several disturbing items, including a bloodied hammer, a hatchet, a knife, a gas can, and a bottle of bleach. Following these findings, investigators obtained a search warrant for Johnson’s residence, where they uncovered additional evidence suggesting a violent crime, including bloodstains throughout the home, as well as a bat that appeared to have been recently cleaned.
Roney’s family described her as “a vibrant, kind, and loving soul” who had deeply touched the lives of those around her. Her sister, Michelle Tischner, recounted the last time she saw Roney was on Christmas Day, stating that Roney failed to show up for her work shift the day before her body was discovered.
In the aftermath of the tragic incident, authorities revealed that Johnson had a history of abusive behaviour towards Roney. During a police interview, he spoke of having had a prior argument with her, indicating that their relationship had come to an end. However, his attorney has not provided any comments on the case.
As part of a plea agreement reached in court, Johnson will receive a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors, in exchange for his admission of guilt, have also decided against pursuing the death penalty. A sentencing date has been set for December 17.
This case has raised significant concerns regarding domestic violence and its devastating effects. Victims often find themselves trapped in dangerous situations, highlighting the need for better support systems for those in abusive relationships.
