Jeff Garlin, the actor best known for his role on the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs, has opened up about a severe mental health crisis he endured during his departure from the show. In December 2021, Garlin faced scrutiny following a human resources investigation into allegations of misconduct on set. These claims pointed to a pattern of verbal and physical behaviour that made several cast and crew members uncomfortable. The investigation ultimately led to a mutually agreed departure for Garlin from The Goldbergs, a show he once described as a “gift” that he failed to appreciate at the time.

Reflecting on this tumultuous period, Garlin shared his experience during the 21 October episode of the podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name, hosted by Ted Danson. He candidly recounted the mental breakdown that followed the conclusion of his tenure on the show, admitting that he felt overwhelmed and contemplated suicide.
In a heartfelt moment, Garlin disclosed a troubling conversation he had with comedian Susie Essman, in which he warned her of his suicidal thoughts. “I hate when people don’t reach out, but at noon today I will be dead,” he said he told her, emphasising the seriousness of his feelings. Thankfully, Essman reached out to other friends and family members, which helped to rally support around Garlin during his time of crisis.
Garlin’s friend Brad Morris stepped in, watching over him while arrangements were made for treatment. The actor ultimately made the decision to enter a rehabilitation facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he began to seek help seriously. He underwent dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), a treatment modality designed to assist individuals in managing intense emotions and behaviours, particularly those struggling with conditions like bipolar disorder, which remains a significant facet of Garlin’s life.
He described DBT as essential in addressing his suicidal ideation and helping him navigate the aftermath of his mental health struggles. This type of therapy emphasises acceptance and mindfulness, providing individuals with tools to cope with their emotions and make positive changes in their lives.
Garlin acknowledged the importance of support from loved ones during this challenging time. Years of treatment, coupled with understanding friends and family, played a crucial role in his journey to regain stability and contentment. His experience serves as a poignant reminder of the vital support that can be found in community and relationships, especially in moments of crisis.
Today, at 64 years old, Garlin expresses gratitude for the lessons learned through his ordeal and the journey toward understanding his mental health. He hopes that by sharing his story, he can help others facing similar struggles, shedding light on the importance of reaching out and seeking help in times of despair.
Mental health awareness has become an increasingly important conversation, particularly in the entertainment industry, where pressures can be manifold. Garlin’s story adds to the growing discourse, encouraging open dialogue about mental health challenges and the significance of mental well-being. His candid reflections remind us all that it is essential to pay attention to our mental health and to reach out to those we care about or to seek help when we need it.
As he continues to navigate his recovery, Garlin remains an advocate for mental health awareness, sharing his experiences as a way to empathise and connect with others. It’s crucial for anyone struggling to understand they are not alone, and that seeking help is a sign of strength rather than weakness.
