A family in Roseville, Michigan, is rallying support for an 80-year-old grandfather named George McCarthy, who is working as a pizza delivery driver to fund his medical treatment for lung cancer. Despite having recently undergone surgery to remove a tumour from his lung, McCarthy feels compelled to return to work due to financial pressures.

Having received the diagnosis of lung cancer, the challenges faced by McCarthy have only compounded his ongoing health issues. He has previously battled prostate and kidney cancer, with the latter metastasising to his lungs. In addition to this, McCarthy survived a heart attack in 2020 and now faces significant daily struggles, such as shortness of breath.

“We have no choice. I have to do it to survive,” McCarthy explained during an interview with WXYZ-TV Detroit, reflecting the difficult reality faced by many elderly individuals with chronic health conditions in navigating the financial burdens of medical care. Despite his age and medical challenges, the limited income from his Social Security benefits is insufficient to cover the medical expenses that Medicare does not address.
As a result, McCarthy found himself back at Jet’s Pizza delivering pizzas just days after surgery. His boss, Anthony Boschian, expressed admiration for McCarthy, noting, “the whole store loves him.” The sense of community at Jet’s Pizza is strong, and they have organised a fundraising event scheduled for November 3 to alleviate some of McCarthy’s financial strain. His medical bills have left him feeling “backed up and maxed out,” as he struggles to meet his obligations.
While his return to work has highlighted his tenacity, it has also raised concerns among his family members. His granddaughter, Ashley Lafata, shared her distress over her grandfather’s rapid return to work after his operation. She noted, “When he had that tumour removed, to hear that he was just going back to work, I was like, ‘You don’t want to recover a little bit?’ and he’s like, ‘I’ve got to work.’ It hurts me every single day.”
In light of his circumstances, an online crowdfunding campaign has been established to support McCarthy during this difficult time. The fundraiser emphasises the sacrifices McCarthy has made throughout his life to care for himself and his loved ones. “He shouldn’t have to choose between taking care of his health and being able to afford the basic necessities of life,” the campaign’s message read. “At 80 years old, he deserves the opportunity to rest, focus on his treatment, and spend time surrounded by the people who love him—not worry about how he will pay his bills.”
McCarthy, reflecting on his family’s support, acknowledged that they are his motivation. “I have a wonderful family,” he said. “That keeps me going.” This sentiment resonates with many elderly individuals who often find their strength in familial bonds during challenging times.
The hardship experienced by McCarthy is a stark reminder of the wider issues related to healthcare and financial security faced by many elderly citizens in the US. As healthcare costs continue to rise, the stories of those like McCarthy highlight the challenges that seniors endure while balancing their health needs with financial realities.
The upcoming fundraiser offers a glimmer of hope for McCarthy and signifies how a community can come together in times of need. It serves as a call to action for those who can assist in providing relief, helping McCarthy to focus on recovery rather than financial worries. With the love and support of his family and friends, George McCarthy continues to show resilience in the face of adversity, embodying the spirit of determination amidst life’s challenges.
