Erin and Ben Napier, known for their popular HGTV series Home Town, have shared their reflections on the launch of the Canadian iteration of their franchise, Home Town Takeover, which recently debuted in Port Alberni, British Columbia. In an interview with PEOPLE, the couple expressed their excitement and surreal feelings about seeing their franchise expand internationally, a milestone they described as exceeding their wildest dreams.

The Canadian version of Home Town Takeover is hosted by Sarah and Bryan Baeumler, who are well-known figures in home renovation on HGTV, particularly for their work on Renovation Island. The Baeumlers are tasked with revamping various homes, businesses, and community spaces within the picturesque town, all while working against a tight deadline. The Napiers, although unable to legally host the show due to production regulations, offered their expertise during the initial phases of the project.

Ben Napier explained that they could not take on hosting duties for the Canadian version because their production company is based in Canada. Despite their absence as hosts, the couple’s involvement in kickstarting the project included redesigning key elements, like the community sign, to better reflect the town’s identity and culture. “Our production company is Canadian,” Erin shared, highlighting the importance of having local talent at the helm of the show. “Being Americans, we are not legally allowed to host the show. We can only be in it as guest stars.”
During their visit to Port Alberni, the Napiers were able to enjoy the beauty of Canada and experience a more relaxed atmosphere than usual while filming. “It felt like we were on vacation,” Ben remarked, with Erin adding that Canada is especially stunning during the summer months. Their involvement allowed them to embrace a lighter role while watching the Baeumlers lead the initiative. Ben noted how they were both comfortable handing over responsibilities, complementing the new hosts for their popularity and passion for the project.
The Baeumlers expressed their enthusiasm and slight apprehension about stepping into such a significant role. “We wanted to bring the same heart to the show, along with our own approach to construction and design,” they explained. Recognising the legacy that Erin and Ben have built, they aimed to honour it while adding their unique touch. Sarah and Bryan also emphasised the beauty of Port Alberni, not only in its natural surroundings but more importantly, in the community spirit that they hoped to highlight through their renovations.
As they began transforming public spaces and businesses, the Baeumlers faced the daunting challenge of juggling multiple projects within the community. “With one renovation, you have one set of moving parts. Here, we were balancing several projects, different needs, and a tight timeline,” they noted, stressing the importance of making thoughtful design decisions that consider the daily life of the community. Their goal was to enhance the pride the locals have in their town and its rich history while fostering a sense of connectivity among residents and visitors.
Although Erin and Ben took part in initial projects to set the groundwork for the franchise’s Canadian debut, the Baeumlers will see the transformations through to completion. The original hosts are now eagerly awaiting the response from the Canadian audience, hoping that the show resonates with its viewers. Erin concluded, “I hope the Canadian fan base feels like it truly represents them. I want the show to reflect Canada in a way that makes Canadians feel proud.”
Currently, Home Town Takeover Canada is set to air exclusively in Canada, with its premiere scheduled for 25 October on HGTV Canada and available for streaming on Citytv+. The expansion of the Home Town franchise into Canada marks a new chapter for the Napiers and their fans, as they continue to inspire communities through renovation and revitalisation, one episode at a time.
