Hosea Chanchez, renowned for his role as Malik Wright in the long-running television series “The Game,” has shared insights about his career and personal evolution during an appearance on Cam Newton’s podcast, “Funky Friday.” Chanchez portrayed the character from 2006 to 2009 and again from 2011 to 2015, ultimately reprising the role in the show’s reboot from 2021 to 2023.

Despite his considerable success on “The Game,” the 45-year-old actor expressed disappointment when he entered the job market following the series’ conclusion. “I assumed it would be a different experience,” he admitted, reflecting on his expectations shaped by observing industry giants such as Will Smith and Denzel Washington. Chanchez had expected a safety net from the industry and his community upon completing his role, but he discovered that such support was lacking.
During his discussion with Newton, Chanchez revealed the deep connection he has maintained with acting since childhood. “Since I was five years old, I dreamed of becoming an actor,” he said, reminiscing about his beginnings in Alabama, where he lacked any real understanding of the acting profession. He likened the determination required to succeed in acting to the drive needed in any artistic endeavour.

Chanchez also reflected on the intertwining of his self-worth with his acting career. He acknowledged that his identity as both an actor and a person was heavily reliant on his work. “If I wasn’t acting, I felt worthless,” he candidly confessed, highlighting the pressures that often accompany a life in the spotlight.
However, he shared that over the past three years, he has undergone a significant transformation in his personal and professional identity. “I’m no longer acting in the same way I used to. I’m a businessman now. I own a company, The Dawn of Good, which focuses on health and wellness,” he explained. This transition has marked a distinct shift in his priorities, as he can no longer afford to take breaks for acting opportunities, even from illustrious projects.

When Newton inquired whether he still identified as an actor, Chanchez responded thoughtfully. “I will always be an actor, but my perspective on the industry has changed,” he clarified. This adjustment comes alongside his admission of retirement; while he had not publicised this decision previously, he confirmed, “I would definitely say I’m retired.”
Chanchez recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of “The Game” with several castmates, including Tia Mowry and Pooch Hall. Reflecting on their time together, Mowry expressed gratitude towards the audience, stating, “You loved these characters, fought for this show, and have kept that love going all these years. We wouldn’t be celebrating 20 years without you.” The reunion underscored the bond formed among the cast and the lasting impact of the series on its viewers.
As Chanchez shifts his focus towards entrepreneurship, he leaves behind a legacy in the entertainment industry while embarking on a new chapter in his life. His story serves as a reminder of both the challenges faced by actors in the industry and the potential for reinvention and success outside the traditional pathways of fame and recognition.
