Bernie Taupin, the renowned lyricist known for his long-standing collaboration with Elton John, has firmly expressed his disinterest in selling his music catalogue. In a recent interview with Billboard, Taupin stated, “I don’t think there’s anything right now that could make me say yes,” when asked if he and John would consider parting with the rights to their extensive body of work.

At the age of 76, Taupin reflected on the potential regrets artists face when selling their catalogues. “I know the fact that so many people who have sold their catalogs aren’t happy about it now,” he noted, emphasising his contentment with the current state of his financial situation. Despite acknowledging that he does not possess vast wealth, he indicated that he maintains a frugal lifestyle, stating, “What am I going to do with it?”
Taupin and Elton John have enjoyed a prolific partnership since 1967, creating iconic songs such as “Your Song,” “Tiny Dancer,” and “Bennie and the Jets.” In July, Taupin had shared similar sentiments in an interview with Rolling Stone, where he reiterated their lack of interest in selling their publishing rights. “We don’t need the money. We both have offspring, and why don’t we leave it up to them?” was his straightforward response to the prospect of selling.
The lyricist also offered a candid perspective on the emotional attachment to their music, suggesting that selling their catalogue is akin to “selling your children.” While acknowledging that opinions may evolve in the future, Taupin’s current convictions showcase a deep commitment to the artistic legacy he and John have built together.
In addition to discussing the sale of their work, Taupin was asked to share a lyric that holds personal significance. He cited a line from “I Feel Like a Bullet (In the Gun of Robert Ford)” from John’s 1975 album *Rock of the Westies* as a noteworthy example of his writing. “I woke up this morning and there was a lyric in my head… I think some of the best lyrics I’ve ever written are on this album,” he said, reflecting on his creative process.
Taupin’s forthcoming solo album, titled *The Sea Has No Mercy*, is set to be released on 23rd October, marking his first solo project in nearly four decades since *Tribe* in 1987. This new work draws inspiration from his 2023 memoir, *Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton, and Me*, which chronicles his experiences in the music industry and his long friendship with John. The album features collaborations with artists Brandi Carlile and Lee Ann Womack, further showcasing Taupin’s versatile approach to songwriting.
To celebrate the launch of his album, Taupin will make his Grand Ole Opry debut on 7th November, an event he described as a significant milestone. His enthusiasm for the upcoming release is palpable, and he anticipates that audiences will connect with the material in new ways.
In earlier discussions about his partnership with Elton John, Taupin highlighted the duo’s mutual love and appreciation for various music genres. “We grew up loving all kinds of music… what’s connected us,” he explained, noting that despite their differing personal lives, their shared passion for music remains the foundation of their collaboration.
As Bernie Taupin prepares to share new music with the world, his commitment to preserving the integrity of his catalogue and maintaining the legacy he has built with Elton John remains resolute. Fans eagerly await the release of *The Sea Has No Mercy*, which promises to add yet another chapter to the remarkable journey of this legendary songwriting duo.
