But no project actually came to be,” he stated in his social media post. “This year, I finally said f— it, I’m gonna write it myself.”

In his announcement, Cudi shared images of himself in preliminary costume tests, showcasing his character’s look. He acknowledged that both the wardrobe and hairstyle are still in the early stages, stating, “Did a wardrobe test, got a wig made (this isnt the final just a rough, trust me we gon get it perfect). But I wanted to tease what we’ve been cooking a bit. This one I’m so proud of and excited about.”
The 42-year-old artist noted the challenge and fulfilment that comes with creating a film about a real person. He mentioned that extensive research involving reading books and speaking to those who knew Basquiat has gone into the project. “This film will be a love letter to Jean, the ‘80s, and New York City,” he noted, indicating the depth of passion and dedication he is investing into the project.
Cudi reflected on the personal significance of Basquiat’s work in his own life, sharing, “Jean has inspired me throughout my career, and it will be the biggest honour to tell his story in a way we haven’t seen before.” He concluded his post with a nod to his followers, saying, “I know a lot of y’all gon be like FINALLY hahaha I love it. This one’s for all those dreamers out there.”
Basquiat, who rose to prominence in the 1980s, was known for his distinctive style that blended text and imagery, tackling issues of identity, race, and culture. He was not just an artist; he was also a prominent social figure, famously collaborating with fellow artist Andy Warhol and dating pop icon Madonna. Basquiat’s life was tragically cut short when he died from an accidental heroin overdose at the age of 27 in 1988.
Although Cudi began his career as a rapper and producer, he has established himself as a versatile actor over the past ten years. His filmography includes appearances in several acclaimed movies and television series, all while producing chart-topping music. Since his debut single “Day ’N’ Nite” in 2008, he has built an impressive resume in both fields.

It was in Brooklyn that he met Kanye West, who signed him to his label, GOOD Music, in 2009. Around this time, he would also secure his first television role in HBO’s *How to Make It in America*.
