After a lengthy career of four decades in medical device sales, Bob Eckola has embarked on an extraordinary journey, trading the confines of his Chicago routine for the thrill of global exploration. At 65 years old, the newly retired sales executive has swapped the boardroom for the world, embarking on a gap year that promises to be filled with adventure. His travels began on 8 September 2026 with a one-way ticket to Tokyo, and it appears he has no intentions of slowing down anytime soon.

Eckola’s gap year is not just a spontaneous decision but part of a longer-term plan with his partner, Molly. While she plans to retire next summer and join him in his explorations, Eckola has taken the initiative to travel solo for the initial phase of this journey. This approach allows him to visit places Molly has already explored or lacks enthusiasm for, while saving some destinations for them to enjoy together in the future. As they search for a potential new home during their travels, Eckola describes his adventures as a way to deepen their travel relationship.
Before heading to Asia, Eckola took a brief detour to Finland to spend time with family and reconnect with distant relatives. After a quick stop back in Chicago to repack, he was off to Japan, where he dedicated the first 35 days of his trip to experiencing the culture, food, and sights of several Asian countries. With planned stops in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea, he initially approached his travel like a traditional holiday.
However, as he transitioned into the second leg of his journey across Southeast Asia, Eckola decided to adopt a more flexible itinerary, prioritising spontaneity over strict pre-planning. His planned destinations include Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, but he embraces the idea of leaving his plans open to change and opportunity.
Eckola acknowledges the challenges that come with navigating new countries. Establishing a reliable means of payment, understanding transportation systems, and knowing where to find good coffee are all part of the traveller’s initial hurdles. Once accustomed to a new environment, he makes it a point to explore freely, approaching each day as an opportunity for new experiences.
In Taiwan, for instance, he found himself enjoying a local park that featured public gyms, where he engaged in workouts and observed tai chi practitioners. In Seoul’s Hongdae district, he unwittingly ended up playing guitar at an acoustic café, adding moments of creativity to his journey. “I set intentions but don’t stick to scripts,” Eckola stated, emphasising the joy that comes with unplanned adventures.
Eckola’s journey is shared with an enthusiastic audience on his TikTok account, A View to Chill. With over 50,000 followers, he aims to inspire others, particularly those approaching or in their sixties, to reconsider the narrative surrounding retirement. He feels that there is a need for more positive representations of life after sixty, leading him to share his experiences online.
Encouraged by Molly, Eckola began posting not only to entertain but to demonstrate what life can offer after a career. His account has fostered connections with like-minded individuals and sparked conversations about alternative lifestyles that defy traditional retirement expectations. He even playfully challenged younger generations, suggesting that adventure is not limited to the youth.
Eckola humbly conveys that what he is doing is not extraordinary. He has been heartened by the supportive community of ‘vagabonds’ he has connected with, who regularly share stories of their own travel escapades. He feels a true sense of camaraderie within this group, emphasising that their stories are often filled with encouragement rather than competition.
For now, Eckola intends to continue his adventures before returning to Chicago for the festive season. He plans to come back briefly at the end of March for tax preparations and financial responsibilities, and again in July to assist Molly in relocating before she joins him on the road. As the couple braces for this new chapter together, they look forward to embracing the uncertainties and excitement that travel brings.
Eckola’s journey highlights the idea that life after retirement can be full of purpose and adventure. Rather than conforming to conventional expectations, he encourages others to take a leap into the unknown, proving that it is never too late to embrace new experiences.
