Extreme adventurer Ash Dykes is currently undertaking a remarkable challenge as he navigates a 434-mile journey along the Sangha River in the heart of the Congo Basin. The communications team managing Dykes’ social media accounts announced the disconnection, stating, “It’s been more than 16 hours since we last heard from Ash and the team, which is concerning.” They acknowledged that a malfunction with the satellite connectivity provided by Starlink, combined with a dead power bank, hindered their ability to send video updates or longer messages from the expedition.

Dykes’ journey is the first part of his ambitious Project Six, which has drawn significant attention across social media since it was announced. Many have expressed worry about the potential dangers he may encounter, while others have voiced skepticism regarding the feasibility of his undertaking.

From the outset of his adventure, Dykes has faced a series of challenges. After arriving in Africa to commence his journey, Dykes experienced a setback when some essential luggage belonging to his crew went missing during transit from the United Kingdom. While the luggage was eventually recovered, the team acknowledged that it contained critical supplies, including tent components and food supplies, that were vital for the expedition.
Additionally, the crew encountered bureaucratic hurdles concerning their visas, necessitating an alternative route into the Central African Republic from Cameroon. Despite these early obstacles, Dykes has persisted in his journey, relaying information to his team through various communication devices, including a satellite phone and Starlink equipment.
Just hours after their initial announcement of lost contact, Dykes’ team provided an update that brought relief to his supporters. They shared, “UPDATE: we JUST received a message from Ash’s sat-phone/Garmin! EVERYONE IS SAFE!” The team explained that, while the Starlink device was non-functional and their power bank had died, they were still able to send brief messages whenever a signal was available.
As this expedition continues, it represents only the beginning of Dykes’ broader mission, Project Six. While the next leg of the project remains undisclosed, Dykes teased in a recent interview that the upcoming segment would feature extreme conditions, with temperatures expected to drop to around -15°C (5°F).
Dykes has long been accustomed to the unpredictable nature of extreme exploration. In an earlier conversation, he commented on the inherent risks, saying, “There’s definitely the fear that anything can happen. It is an adventure, and as experienced as I am, I can anticipate what might happen and try to understand, based on experience, how I usually react to those situations. I feel that I’ve got what it takes to bring us all back safe and alive.”
As he forges ahead on this remarkable expedition, Dykes embodies the spirit of adventure and resilience. His journey not only tests his limits but also ignites interest and concern among the public, illustrating the complexities and unpredictability faced by those who seek to explore the wildest corners of our planet. While communication remains sporadic, supporters are eagerly awaiting further updates on his progress and well-being as he continues his trek through the breathtaking yet challenging terrains of the Congo Basin.
