Ryan Gosling has credited Julia Roberts for helping him navigate a significant challenge on the set of his latest film, ‘Project Hail Mary’. During an interview with IndieWire, the 45-year-old actor recounted how an unexpected conversation with the acclaimed actress led to a creative solution while he was grappling with his role in the sci-fi adventure film.

Gosling portrays the character Ryland Grace in ‘Project Hail Mary’, a narrative based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel. The film follows Grace, a science teacher who awakens on a spacecraft with no memory of how he arrived. Tasked with saving Earth from a dying sun, his journey involves solving a complex mystery and forging a unique friendship.
While filming, Gosling found himself isolated as much of his performance involved interacting with a rock-like alien character named Rocky. Reflecting on his time on set, he shared, “I had been acting for a long time on the film and gone through a lot of incarnations of the character. I really felt like I had tried everything I could think of.” He described some rather unusual methods he employed, including wearing a “placenta onesie” and embodying behaviours reminiscent of a toddler.
Despite the investment in the film’s extravagant visual elements, Gosling felt increasingly fatigued by the solitary nature of his role. It was during this low point that he fortuitously crossed paths with Roberts, who was on set filming ‘After the Hunt’, directed by Luca Guadagnino. Their conversation proved to be both refreshing and pivotal, as Roberts shared her own experiences and the enjoyment she found in the camaraderie of her cast.
“Julia sat down and talked to me about how much fun she was having on her set,” Gosling recalled. “She said, ‘You should come over,’ and I needed human interaction.” Intrigued, he accepted her invitation and found himself amidst a lively party scene, which starkly contrasted his own work environment.
Upon his return to the ‘Project Hail Mary’ set, Gosling was inspired to make a significant change in his approach. “When I returned to the set, I said, ‘I want a friend, I want someone to act with,’” he explained. This led to the unusual decision to create a makeshift companion for his character.
With the help of his crew, Gosling introduced Moppy Ringwald, a mop transformed into a character complete with sunglasses and a dress. “They stopped everything on our fancy, expensive day and crawled around the sets looking for tape and glasses,” he noted, emphasising the collaborative effort that went into creating this quirky scene partner.
Despite being a stark contrast to the high-tech, visually stunning backdrop of the film, Moppy Ringwald ultimately made it into the final cut of ‘Project Hail Mary’. Gosling remarked, “What were supposed to be these great visual scenes with all these LEDs, it was just a mop and sunglasses, and they put it in the movie.”
Gosling’s experience serves as a reminder that creative breakthroughs can often emerge from the most unexpected conversations. He quipped, “If you’re having a problem and you can’t solve it, talk to Julia Roberts. That’s the big lesson here. She’ll solve it for you.”
Julia Roberts herself has been supportive of Gosling’s career, previously praising his performance in ‘Barbie’. She described the film as “so unique and new” and lauded Gosling for the dimension he brought to his role.
Both ‘Project Hail Mary’ and ‘After the Hunt’ are now available to stream on Prime Video, allowing audiences to witness the creative endeavours that emerged from a connection between two celebrated actors. Gosling’s story exemplifies the value of collaboration and the unexpected ways it can inspire artistic growth.
