Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has shared insights into his experiences as a father and the emotional connections he has with his children. In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, the Duke revealed how he came to understand that his young son, Archie, who is seven years old, is sensitive to the emotional states of his parents, particularly during the stressful periods of their lives.

Reflecting on his time before stepping back from royal duties, Prince Harry recounted instances when he felt overwhelmed. He described how, following Archie’s birth, he would often return home from a stressful drive to London, feeling a palpable tension that his infant son would immediately pick up on. “If I was still stressed, he would feel it immediately,” Harry explained, noting the profound bond between parent and child.

During the interview, Harry detailed his strategies for coping with stress when returning home to his family in Frogmore Cottage, Windsor. He used the 40-minute drive as a time to mentally transition from his royal responsibilities, attempting to arrive home in a calmer state. He noted that when he succeeded in this, Archie would lean into him, affirming the idea that emotional energy is very much a shared experience between them. “The energy is a real thing,” he remarked, emphasising the importance of being aware of one’s emotions as a parent.
Harry stressed the significance of emotional awareness for parents, asserting that children can instinctively sense their parents’ feelings. “We’ve just got to be so conscious about what we carry that they can pick up,” he said. This realisation led him to advocate for personal healing as an essential part of parenting, suggesting that making an effort to address one’s emotional challenges is beneficial not only for oneself but also for the children involved.
The de-stressing move to Canada in late 2019 provided Harry with a different perspective. He described experiencing an “adrenaline crash” after years of living under the pressures of royal life. This abrupt change in environment led him to confront feelings of depression, which he hadn’t anticipated. “I became useless around the house,” he confessed, reflecting on struggling without the adrenaline rush he had become accustomed to.
He attributed much of this emotional difficulty to unresolved grief over the loss of his mother, Princess Diana. Harry stated that for a long time, he felt guilty for allowing himself to experience happiness without her presence. “I felt disloyal… to be happy and joyful,” explained Harry, underscoring the complexity of emotions surrounding familial loss. Ultimately, he reached a pivotal understanding that his mother would have wanted him to find joy. This realisation marked a significant shift in his mental outlook, allowing him to pursue a more positive perspective on life.
As Harry prepares to move back to the UK with his family, he expressed hopes of reconciling strained relationships within the royal family. His relationship with both his father, King Charles, and his brother, Prince William, has often been described as complicated. Although there have been indications of communication between Harry and his father since their return, reports suggest that Harry and William remain distanced, with William maintaining a position that family relations are solely up to their father.
Harry acknowledged the universal nature of familial strife, stating that such issues are “massively relatable.” He revealed that he experiences a sense of mourning for the familial bonds he once had, indicating a longing for a more unified family experience. Despite challenges, he remains hopeful about the future, stating, “Scars stick around forever, but your perception and mindset towards those things can change.”
In light of his experiences, Harry encourages individuals to let go of past grievances that continue to affect their lives. “There’s enough drama in the world… than to continue with issues with family,” he concluded, reinforcing his desire for healing and a simpler, happier existence moving forward.
Prince Harry’s candid reflections shed light on the complexities of parenthood and emotional health, reminding us that our children often serve as mirrors to our own feelings. Through this dialogue, Harry invites a broader conversation on the importance of emotional well-being in family dynamics, particularly in high-pressure environments.
