Extreme adventurer Ash Dykes recently shared a rather painful experience during his expedition down the Sangha River in the Congo Basin. The daring adventurer, who is undertaking a challenging 434-mile journey as integral to his “Project Six”, recorded the moment on TikTok, providing followers with a glimpse into the surprising hazards he faces while navigating the wilderness.

In a video posted on 20 October, Dykes recounted an unexpected encounter with an insect, remarking that he felt a sharp sting after noticing a strange movement beneath his shirt. “It was right under my shirt, up my back,” he explained. The adventurer described the incident as a nasty little sting, speculating whether it was a bee or another type of insect. He remarked with humour in his caption, “Not entirely sure what got me, but it’s certainly made itself known!”
Dykes’ journey down the Sangha River has been the subject of significant interest since his initial announcements over the summer. As he embarks on his expedition, many have speculated about the various wildlife he might encounter, ranging from insects to large animals. Although Dykes had previously avoided serious encounters with bothersome insects prior to this sting, he reminded his audience that the jungle is filled with more than just the larger wildlife that often captures attention.
The Congo Basin adventure is the first of six planned excursions for Dykes under the umbrella of “Project Six”. Anticipation is building as the adventurer prepares for his subsequent challenge, set to begin just two weeks after he finalises his current journey. The next project promises to test him in significantly colder temperatures, with expectations of around -15°C (5°F).
Although his experience has been thrilling, Dykes has faced setbacks since arriving in the Congo Basin. He lost his luggage shortly after landing, though it was eventually returned. Furthermore, complications with visa regulations forced him to reconsider his entrance route, leading his team to travel overland from Cameroon to the Central African Republic.
As he journeys through the incredible landscape, Dykes is not alone; he is accompanied by a local guide and a UK-based videographer. Together, they are traversing the Sangha River from Nola in the Central African Republic to Mossaka in the Republic of Congo using inflatable rafts. When asked about his choice of vessel for this challenging expedition during an interview with PEOPLE, Dykes emphasised that an inflatable raft was both robust and easy to portage, making it a practical choice for navigating the river’s uncertain waters.
Dykes’ affinity for adventure has already made waves on social media, drawing in viewers eager to witness his latest exploits. His video documentation not only captures the spine-tingling thrill of his journey but also serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of exploration. The incident with the insect illustrates that dangers can emerge from both expected and surprising sources in the wild.
The spirit of exploration drives Dykes, who has previously conquered challenging feats around the globe. As he continues his expedition, followers are keen to see how his resilience and humour help him navigate the physical challenges posed by nature. Whether it’s overcoming insect stings or logistical hurdles, Dykes remains steadfast in his quest to explore the untamed corners of the world.
As he moves onward through the unmapped territories of the Congo Basin, the adventure continues to unfold, with Ash Dykes becoming a source of inspiration for many. The journey not only highlights the beauty and complexity of the environment but also serves as an impressive testament to human perseverance against the elements—and the occasional insect.
