A tragic incident involving an air ambulance in India has raised serious concerns over flight safety protocols. On Sunday, October 18, a domestic air ambulance experienced a critical cabin pressurisation issue that led to the emergency diversion of the aircraft to Bangladesh. This incident has resulted in the death of a 56-year-old woman, identified as Anjana Bhowmik.

According to local reports, the Beechcraft King Air C90A, which had taken off from Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala, was bound for Kolkata. The journey typically lasts about an hour. However, shortly after reaching an altitude of 12,000 feet, the aircraft encountered difficulties when its main door partially opened due to the pressurisation failure. Consequently, the pilot made the decisive choice to divert to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
A spokesperson for HSIA confirmed that the air ambulance had developed a mechanical fault during the flight. Fortunately, the plane managed to land safely at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time, despite the harrowing circumstances. Immediately upon landing, the patient was transferred to Kurmitola Multicare Specialised Hospital. Sadly, medical staff declared her dead by 4:40 p.m., with details surrounding the cause of her death yet to be established.

The passenger manifest indicated that the aircraft was carrying a total of seven individuals. This included two pilots, a physician, a paramedic, an attendant, an additional passenger, and the patient. Importantly, as the air ambulance was engaged in a domestic flight, neither the crew nor the passengers possessed passports or visas, which is a requirement for international travel. This situation complicated the emergency landing, as it left those involved without the necessary clearance for an unscheduled landing in Bangladesh.
Following the tragic turn of events, officials from both the Bangladesh foreign ministry and the Indian High Commission were engaged throughout the day to resolve the complex situation surrounding the aircraft’s extended stay at HSIA. The aircraft remained at the airport for an extended period as clearance protocols were carefully coordinated.
Witness accounts and further inquiries into the incident have highlighted a pressing need for stringent safety checks and protocols to prevent future occurrences of similar nature. The circumstances leading to the malfunction of the air ambulance’s door pose serious questions regarding the maintenance and oversight conducted by the operating airline.
In light of this calamity, both the aviation authorities and medical transport services are expected to undertake a thorough review of safety measures currently in place. Reports and testimonies from those on board will likely play a crucial role in elucidating the chain of events leading up to this tragedy.
While investigations are ongoing, the heartfelt condolences of the community have been extended to the family of Anjana Bhowmik. As more information comes to light, there is a collective hope that lessons will be learned to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
