In a remarkable tale of renovation and a touch of whimsy, Melani and Adam Heldt, a couple recently relocated from Michigan to Arizona, have found a unique solution to their kitchen woes. After purchasing their new home without having seen it in person, the couple embarked on an ambitious renovation project. Their journey led them to a distinctive antique icebox, which they affectionately named “Freddy”.

The Heldts began their renovation with the kitchen, quickly discovering that finding a refrigerator to complement their home’s aesthetic was no easy task. Melani, aged 34, expressed her frustration over the lack of suitable options, stating, “We just couldn’t find one that fit the colours of our home or looked natural in the area.” After months of searching, Adam came across a listing for a professionally converted icebox on Facebook Marketplace — a significant find, considering its impressive history.
This vintage appliance, dating back to 1910, had been restored for prior use in a restaurant, leading the couple to contemplate a deviation from the traditional fridge model. As Melani recounted, “We started joking about it and thought, ‘What if we don’t get a conventional fridge and instead use this?’” This idea transformed into reality when they decided to acquire the icebox, prompting a trip to meet the seller over an hour away.

After measuring their space and securing the purchase for £4,995, the challenges commenced. The couple soon realised that moving the hefty icebox would require special handling, as it weighed over 1,000 pounds and posed significant logistical challenges in their historic home. Initially budgeting a few hundred pounds for the move, they ultimately spent £1,200 due to unforeseen complications and further expenses totalling £800 to ensure it became operational.
It took nearly seven weeks from the date of purchase for “Freddy” to finally take its rightful place in their kitchen. The attempt to manoeuvre the sizable unit through doorways proved daunting. Workers had to remove the refrigeration lines and the compressor just to fit it through the restaurant’s entrance and then into the Heldt home. Melani described the painstaking process: “They had to slide it into our dining area and then into this room. My husband had to rip all the framing out – the door, the doorframe – to get it in,” she explained.
With the icebox securely placed, the couple took the necessary precautions to reinforce the floor due to its weight. They also carefully positioned the appliance close to the basement’s stone foundation, adding metal beams to support it further. Throughout this process, the couple had to pivot when it came to functionality; the icebox needed periodic draining because of residual water, for which they currently use a stainless steel bowl every few days.
Now fully integrated into their family’s life, the antique fridge remains a focal point of their renovation journey. Melani highlighted how the unexpected acquisition of “Freddy” sparked their larger house renovation plans. “Finding the fridge kind of kick-started this whole thing,” she said, referring to the couple’s ongoing work through the entirety of their 15-room home.
The Heldts, who began their DIY journey with little experience, expressed a sense of empowerment as they learned along the way. “We don’t have any real experience in DIY at all. Everything we do is for our kids, and that was actually one of the deciding factors,” shared Melani. The icebox not only serves a practical purpose but allows their children to engage with a piece of history, turning what some might see as an impractical appliance into a cherished part of the home.
In recent weeks, they have designated a special compartment within the fridge solely for their two sons’ snacks and drinks, underscoring their desire to create not just a house, but a warm, inviting home filled with memories. Melani encapsulated their philosophy regarding home building: “It’s about creating a space that feels meaningful and integrated into our lives.”
The couple’s renovation efforts have inspired numerous individuals who have contacted them regarding similar antique fridges. The Heldts’ journey underscores the notion that a home is more than just its physical structure; it is about breathing new life into the past and forging memories for the future.
