Former Congressman Matt Gaetz is now facing serious allegations of sex trafficking following a lawsuit filed by two women in Florida. This latest development comes after Gaetz’s resignation from Congress in 2024 in the midst of a House Ethics Committee investigation that uncovered compelling evidence suggesting he had engaged in sexual activities with multiple women, including a minor.

The lawsuit claims that Gaetz, alongside two associates, orchestrated a scheme involving the “recruitment, payments, drugs, and travel to obtain commercial sex acts from young women.” The allegations focus on Gaetz’s conduct while serving in the US Congress, with the plaintiffs alleging that the former representative and an ex-state legislator, Joel Greenberg, exploited their positions of power to prey on vulnerable individuals.

The suit, reported first by the Miami Herald, asserts that Gaetz and Greenberg made promises to the young women in exchange for sexual favours. The women, who were in their early twenties at the time of their encounters with Gaetz, claim that they were misled into believing that their financial struggles would be alleviated if they complied with the defendants’ demands. The lawsuit describes the manipulation tactics employed, stating that the plaintiffs were coerced into silence by the defendants’ economic advantages.

One of the plaintiffs, referred to as Jane Doe 1, alleged that Gaetz and his associates led her to believe they could help resolve her financial difficulties as long as she performed sexual acts. Similarly, Jane Doe 2 claimed she felt compelled to continue engaging in sexual activities for fear of jeopardising her education and financial security.
Prior to his resignation, Gaetz was already under scrutiny due to a House Ethics Committee investigation which had identified “substantial evidence” of his misconduct. The committee’s findings pointed to allegations of Gaetz paying for sex with multiple women, including a girl aged just 17. Gaetz has consistently denied any sexual involvement with minors and has declared his intent to contest the current lawsuit vigorously.
Public statements from Gaetz indicate that he looks forward to deposing the plaintiffs and challenging the allegations, which he insists are unfounded and reliant upon a congressional report that limited his ability to confront his accusers. For context, Joel Greenberg, Gaetz’s former associate, is currently serving an 11-year federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to various federal crimes, including underage sex trafficking.
Gaetz’s political career began when he was elected as the U.S. representative for Florida’s 1st Congressional District in 2016. Although he faced serious accusations related to child sex trafficking and statutory rape as early as 2020, the Department of Justice concluded its investigation in 2023 without bringing any charges against him. This allowed Gaetz to continue serving in Congress until his resignation.
During his tenure, Gaetz was regarded as a prominent ally of former President Donald Trump, even making a speech in support of him during the 2024 Republican National Convention. Subsequently, Trump nominated him for the role of U.S. attorney general, which led to Gaetz resigning his House seat to prepare for confirmation. However, within a week, Gaetz retracted his nomination due to insufficient support.
Despite being re-elected to another term in Congress, Gaetz chose not to attempt a return to the House. Just a month after his resignation, the House Ethics Committee published a report highlighting various allegations against Gaetz, which included payments to women for sex and illegal drug use, although the committee found insufficient evidence to charge him with federal sex trafficking violations.
The report by the committee outlined that, while there was significant evidence to suggest Gaetz violated House rules regarding prostitution and drug use, it did not substantiate a violation of federal trafficking statutes. The Ethics Committee’s conclusions indicated that Gaetz had also accepted illicit gifts and privileges, raising further questions about his conduct while in office.
As the allegations unfold, the political future of Matt Gaetz remains uncertain, casting a long shadow over a once-prominent figure in Republican politics. The coming weeks and months will likely provide crucial insights into the case and its implications for both Gaetz and similar allegations in the political landscape.
