In an intriguing twist for fans of the hit series “9-1-1: Nashville,” season two has made a bold move by immersing itself in a narrative inspired by the biblical plagues of Egypt. The new season premiered on 15th October 2023 with an episode titled “Going Rogue,” featuring a blend of high-stakes emergencies that highlight both terror and teamwork.

The show’s lead, Chris O’Donnell, who plays Captain Don, has expressed his enthusiasm for this unique storyline, stating that it opens the door for a series of unnerving scenarios. Viewers were introduced to the chaos as Don and his team faced two bizarre emergencies: a museum function disrupted by an influx of murder hornets and a laundry room flooded with ominous red water, reminiscent of a gory horror flick.

Joining the cast this season is Ryan Phillippe, who portrays Detective Rogue. His character is set to provide both collaboration and confrontation with O’Donnell’s Captain Don. The detective’s inclusion brings an interesting dynamic to the series, especially as the team investigates the recreation of the ten plagues, with eight more to unfold as the season progresses.
O’Donnell, reflecting on the premise, remarked on his initial surprise at how imaginative the script was. “When I read it for the first time, I thought, ‘Where did they come up with this?’” he said, adding that he appreciates the show’s penchant for the bizarre. “The crazier, the better,” he added, pointing to the adventurous spirit that has come to define the series.
Interestingly, while filming the murder hornet scene, O’Donnell shared that no live insects were used. Instead, actors interacted with lifelike stuffed replicas, although he grimly realised how large such creatures could be. “I would not want to encounter a real murder hornet,” he confessed, revealing his willingness to engage in challenging scenarios as long as safety was ensured.
As for the surreal river of blood that permeates the laundromat incident, O’Donnell described the special effects as “nasty” but effective in creating a haunting visual reminiscent of horror classics. He shared that during the scene, he was somewhat shielded from the gruesome effects of the faux blood, while his co-stars, Hunter McVey and Michael Provost, faced the brunt of the watery chaos as they searched for a character trapped in distress.
Despite the wild emergencies, the true highlight of the premiere was the evolving relationship between Don and Detective Rogue. The tension escalated when Rogue inadvertently exposed Don’s domestic issues to the captain’s family. O’Donnell noted the importance of this interaction, as it showcased Don’s protective nature over his private life, setting the stage for a complex and occasionally antagonistic partnership with the detective.
Phillippe’s portrayal of Rogue is expected to add a compelling layer to the series, which O’Donnell has praised, calling him “a great addition to the cast.” He anticipates a future filled with intriguing exchanges between the two characters, suggesting that while their start may be rocky, their partnership will evolve into something beneficial.
O’Donnell also hinted at a range of horror-themed elements that viewers can expect in the upcoming episodes. Drawing inspiration from iconic horror films like “The Shining” and “Seven,” he emphasised the excitement of tackling a genre that pushes him out of his comfort zone. “I’ve never done a horror film, but this project allows me to explore that territory in a different way,” he said.
Fans of “9-1-1: Nashville” can look forward to more episodes each Thursday night at 9 PM ET on ABC, with streaming available the following day on Hulu and Disney+. As the mysteries of the plagues continue to unfold, viewers are likely to remain on the edge of their seats, eager to see how the season progresses.
