A bride’s special day nearly turned into a nightmare when Sofia Costa discovered her eye had swollen dramatically just before her wedding in Spain. Costa, a seasoned wedding videographer, was well aware of the pressures associated with looking one’s best on such a significant occasion. Yet, on the morning prior to her nuptials to Andrew Martin, she faced a startling setback that brought her plans into disarray.

The 35-year-old bride awoke to find that one of her eyes was almost completely shut, a sight that immediately filled her with panic. “I jumped up in a panic and yelled to Andrew, ‘I think my eye is swollen!’” she recalled, racing to the bathroom and staring in disbelief at her “incredibly swollen” reflection.

The day was supposed to be packed with activities, including a lengthy drive to the wedding venue, checking in for accommodations, and hosting a welcome party for family and friends who had travelled for the occasion. Facing the reality of greeting her guests with her swollen eye was “gutting”. “It’s not how I imagined the event to go,” Costa expressed, visibly upset.

In search of relief, Costa sought immediate medical attention. Arriving at an emergency clinic in Spain, she faced the additional anxiety of not having her health card on hand. However, the receptionist’s understanding quickened her treatment process upon hearing Costa’s distressing news that her wedding was only a day away.
The attending doctor was unable to provide a definitive diagnosis, ruling out the possibility of a stye or insect bite. “It was totally mysterious,” Costa stated, but she left the clinic with a steroid cream, eye drops, and a few over-the-counter medications. Despite her attempts to remain calm and restrict her emotions, the bride felt herself crumbling inside.
Desperate for answers, Costa turned to social media for solace and solutions. She was inundated with suggestions for home remedies, which included everything from warm compresses and chamomile tea bags to an unexpected remedy: a warm potato. “I tried all of them,” she recalled, determined to alleviate the swelling before the ceremony.
Despite her best efforts, as the welcome party commenced, Costa’s eye remained sealed shut and she opted for sunglasses to mitigate her insecurity. Guests gasped at the sight of her eye, a stark contrast to the elegant setting she had envisioned for her big day. “When you’ve spent so many years creating beautiful memories for other people, to have your own experience fall short felt like a kick in the stomach,” she shared.
However, amid the discomfort and self-doubt, Costa felt an outpouring of love and support from her family and friends. Their concern and encouragement shifted her focus from her appearance to the love surrounding her. “It made me feel that nothing mattered anymore, and being surrounded by all my loved ones was the most important thing,” she explained.
Come the morning of her wedding day, Costa discovered that her eye remained swollen. Nevertheless, she decided to avoid mirrors to prevent needless panic. As the hours passed, she continued to apply the home remedies in hopes that her eye would improve in time for the ceremony.
In a fortunate turn of events, just as Costa was about to apply her makeup later that day, the swelling began to subside remarkably. “I was so happy,” she exclaimed, thrilled to finally feel beautiful. Surprisingly, she credited her recovery to the warm potato compress suggested by her aunt, which she now regards as a miraculous remedy.
Finally, Costa and Martin exchanged vows at the picturesque Love Garden estate, just outside Tarifa. “I seriously had the best day of my life,” she reflected, encapsulating a feeling of joy that transcended her earlier worries.
Looking back, Costa has come to view her swollen eye as “a blessing in disguise.” She believes it shifted her focus away from the stressors of wedding planning and allowed her to fully appreciate the moment. “It made me forget my concerns and just be present for the love around me,” she noted.
Following the wedding, Costa shared a heartfelt compilation of her eye’s journey on Instagram, urging others to cherish their special day regardless of external appearances. Her post, which includes behind-the-scenes snippets, garnered over 15 million views. “People care so much about what they look like on their wedding day that we lose sight of what’s important,” she concluded. Through her experience, Costa was reminded to prioritise love and connection over superficial concerns.
