Elizabeth Smart, renowned for her harrowing abduction at the age of 14, has embarked on a new venture aimed at providing strength and support to survivors of trauma through her true crime podcast, *The Survivor Files With Elizabeth Smart*. At 38, Smart, now a mother of three, utilises her platform to share the stories of those who have faced life-altering experiences, highlighting their paths to recovery and resilience.

In her podcast, Smart engages with fellow survivors, exploring the profound challenges they’ve encountered and the inspiring ways they have reclaimed their lives. Drawing from her own traumatic past, which involved being kidnapped from her home in Salt Lake City and held captive for nine months, Smart empathises with her guests, recognising the vulnerability it takes to share such deeply personal narratives.
“These individuals are trusting me with the most difficult moments of their lives,” Smart reflects, as she interviews people like Kara Robinson Chamberlain, who managed to escape a serial killer, and Chris Cander, who was threatened while studying abroad in Spain. Each episode reinforces the notion that survival is a testament to human strength and resilience, inspiring both Smart and her audience.
Smart believes that listening to survivors’ experiences can spark hope and motivation for others facing similar adversities. “I continually find these stories inspiring, and they help me strive towards the life I envision for myself,” she admits. Her aim is to ensure that the listeners resonate with themes of empowerment and recovery, rather than despair.
Reflecting on her personal journey, Smart shares how she has chosen to not let the trauma of her kidnapping dictate her life’s narrative. “I recognise that there are terrible people in the world, and unfortunately, I’ve encountered a few,” she states. “However, it’s vital to live life to its fullest. I want to embrace every opportunity and experience that comes my way.”
As a mother, Smart imparts crucial lessons to her daughters, emphasising the importance of recognising potentially dangerous scenarios and trusting their instincts. “Prioritising your safety should come above being polite,” she advises. Smart warns against suppressing one’s gut feelings, particularly when faced with uncomfortable situations.
She likens the instinct to ignore one’s feelings in the name of politeness to a gazelle willingly entering a lift with a lion. “As women, we often feel the need to avoid offending others, which can be a dangerous thought process,” she elaborates. “It’s crucial for my daughters to understand that if something feels off, they should trust that instinct and remove themselves from the situation.”
Smart’s commitment to educating young women reflects her profound understanding of the challenges they may encounter. “While it’s important to be polite and respectful, listening to one’s intuition must take precedence,” she asserts. Her message is clear: safety should always come first, taking priority over societal expectations of courtesy.
The podcast aims not only to share stories of survival but also to foster a community of support for those who have suffered trauma. Smart encourages anyone who has experienced sexual assault or abuse to seek help, providing resources for those in need of support. “It’s essential for victims to know they’re not alone, and there’s help available,” she urges.
By launching *The Survivor Files*, Smart seeks to empower survivors while imparting crucial life lessons to future generations. Her belief in embracing life after trauma serves as a powerful reminder that while the past can be haunting, the future is still ripe with possibilities.
