In a significant development regarding the tragic 2021 death of rapper Drakeo the Ruler, his mother, Darrylene Corniel, has successfully reached a settlement in her wrongful death lawsuit against Live Nation and several related organisations. The case stemmed from the fatal stabbing of her son, whose real name was Darrell Wayne Caldwell Jr., at the Once Upon a Time in L.A. music festival held in December 2021.

According to court documents reviewed by PEOPLE, filed on 9 October, the specifics of the settlement have not been made public. However, it has been reported that the agreement is conditional, with a requirement for certain terms to be fulfilled within 45 days before the case can be officially dismissed. Apart from Live Nation, the parties involved in the settlement include C3 Presents, Contemporary Services Corporation, Black Tide Events, Bobby Dee Presents, and Hollywood Elite Security.
Corniel, who administers her late son’s estate, initially filed her suit in 2022, accusing the festival’s organisers of negligence. She claimed that Drakeo was killed in a restricted area backstage that should have been adequately secured, allowing a violent group access in the moments leading up to his death. Eyewitness accounts allege that Drakeo was swarmed by a large group of individuals shortly before he was due to take the stage.

Fateful events unfolded on 18 December 2021 when Drakeo was stabbed backstage while in the company of his brother, Devante Caldwell—known professionally as Ralfy the Plug—along with his personal security and friends. Reports indicate that the chaos erupted just as rapper YG arrived backstage, with eyewitnesses describing a scene where between 40 and 60 people surrounded the rapper. Despite this, law enforcement made no arrests immediately following the incident, leading to criticism of the investigation’s pace, which was helmed by the California Highway Patrol.

In July following Drakeo’s death, law officials were reported to have executed a search warrant at a commercial property in Burbank as part of the homicide investigation. This property was said to be linked to YG, whose real name is Keenon Daequan Ray Jackson. Though taken in for questioning during the investigation, Jackson was subsequently released without charges, leaving many questions regarding the incident unanswered.
Corniel’s settlement does not resolve all outstanding claims. Separate wrongful death lawsuits from her grandson, 9-year-old Caiden Caldwell, and negligence claims involving bodyguard Alrick David Cooper III and other individuals present that night remain pending. In the 2022 lawsuit on behalf of Caiden, it was articulated that the young boy has faced considerable emotional and financial distress following the loss of his father, termed a “completely preventable” act of violence.
A trial for these remaining claims has been scheduled for 30 November. The ongoing legal proceedings highlight the broader issues surrounding security at music festivals and the responsibilities of event organisers in ensuring the safety of performers and attendees alike.
Details from the 2022 suit describe the horrifying circumstances of Drakeo’s death. It is alleged that he was attacked while in a golf cart heading toward the stage and that he and his party were subjected to an unrelenting assault lasting several minutes. The suit describes this as a “modern-day lynching,” suggesting that they were heavily outnumbered and unable to escape due to insufficient security measures in place.
Despite having been acquitted of previous charges related to gang activities, legal documents point out that Drakeo’s safety was likely compromised due to ongoing rivalries. Following his acquittal, certain gang members are alleged to have sought “street justice” against him, placing the rapper’s life in jeopardy despite the legal victory.
In response to the tragedy, the music festival released a statement expressing condolences to Drakeo’s family and indicating their cooperation with law enforcement. They conveyed their sorrow over his untimely death and stated a commitment to aiding in uncovering the facts surrounding the incident.
This developing case not only continues to shake the music industry but also raises pressing questions about accountability measures and the adequacy of security at live events, as the court proceedings remain ongoing.
