According to press releases issued by the Skokie Police Department, the situation unfolded shortly after 11 a.m. when officers were alerted to reports of an attempted robbery and battery at the shopping centre, located approximately 16 miles from downtown Chicago. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, as several bystanders rushed to aid the woman, who was reportedly struggling in the water.

The suspect, identified as William Dobbs, was taken into custody following the incident. Authorities stated that the woman and Dobbs did not know each other prior to the confrontation. The police reported that while the two crossed paths in the mall, Dobbs struck the woman unprovoked with a saddle-type bag before forcibly pushing her into the koi pond.
As the attack escalated, witnesses noted that Dobbs allegedly held the woman’s head underwater, leading to immediate concern from onlookers. One witness described the situation, stating it initially appeared as though Dobbs was merely swimming until it became evident that he was in a physical struggle with the woman. “We thought he was just swimming by himself until we came closer and saw a woman underneath the water,” the witness recounted.
Thanks to the intervention of good Samaritans, the woman was eventually rescued from the pond before police arrived on the scene. Emergency services attended to her, and she was subsequently taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, which is a relief given the severity of the situation.
William Dobbs faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, aggravated battery against a senior citizen, and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. He is scheduled to appear in court shortly after the incident.
The Skokie Police Department has urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward, encouraging community members to contact them directly or to use the 24-hour Skokie Crime Tip Hotline for any tips regarding the incident.
This disturbing event has sparked widespread concern regarding safety in public spaces, particularly in areas where families and individuals gather, such as shopping malls. Local residents and frequent visitors to the mall may find themselves reflecting on their surroundings as they go about their daily routines, emphasizing the need for vigilance in all public interactions.
As investigations continue, the case has the potential to shine a light on issues surrounding public safety and the importance of community intervention in dangerous situations. In a time when individual safety can sometimes feel compromised, the actions of bystanders are being recognised as pivotal in preventing a potentially more tragic outcome.
As this story develops, both law enforcement and the local community remain alert, underscoring the ongoing need for awareness and engagement to ensure the safety of all individuals within shared public spaces.
