A tragic incident occurred at Six Flags Over Georgia on 12th October 2023, leading to the untimely death of a 42-year-old man, Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem. Witness accounts shed light on the moments leading up to the fatal event, raising concerns about the safety mechanisms of the park’s Goliath roller coaster.

Two riders shared their experience of the ride just before the incident, describing unsettling noises coming from the restraint systems. They reported that the restraints were making a “weird” clicking sound, suggesting a potential malfunction. According to the couple, this noise was accompanied by what they described as “unlocking and re-locking”, raising alarms as they attempted to secure themselves for the ride.

It appears that the park’s staff were attentive to the situation, frequently checking the restraints on each rider. The female witness expressed that such thorough checks were unusual, stating that typically, staff only inspect the restraints once unless they are visibly loose. Yet, on this occasion, they seemed to triple or quadruple check, which heightened the couple’s sense of unease.
The emotional aftermath of the incident was profound. The woman reported that when the ride came to an end and the tragedy unfolded, the atmosphere was chaotic, with witnesses screaming in shock and terror. She described the scene as akin to something out of a horror film, emphasising the psychological impact it had on those present.
Kariem was an IT manager at Wesley International Academy in Atlanta, and his sudden death has left a void in the lives of many. Colleagues and students at Atlanta Public Schools (APS) expressed their sorrow, calling him a cherished member of the community whose presence would be truly missed. APS conveyed their deepest condolences to Kariem’s family and friends in a heartfelt statement.
Beyond his professional contributions, those close to Kariem revealed that he had triumphed over numerous personal challenges prior to this tragic incident, including bouts with cancer and COVID-19. Distressingly, just weeks before his death, both he and his daughter narrowly escaped a car fire, underscoring the fragility of life.
In response to the devastating event, a spokesperson for Six Flags Over Georgia stated that the park’s team and local authorities responded promptly and are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The spokesperson extended condolences to the bereaved family and noted that support services would be offered to guests and staff affected by the incident.
The Goliath roller coaster, the scene of the tragic incident, will remain closed while investigations take place, although the park plans to open its doors on 16th October as scheduled. The fate of the ride remains uncertain as safety protocols come under scrutiny and officials assess what happened that day.
As the community comes to terms with this loss, the incident has sparked discussions about amusement park safety and the protocols in place to protect guests. The heart-wrenching tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the need for rigorous safety measures at entertainment venues, ensuring that tragedies like this do not recur in the future.
